Introduction

We had friends over for some coq au vin and decided to pull some rather low key Pinot Noirs for it.

Flight 1 (1 note)

We started with a Rosé champagne (Rosé de Saignée). Regis Fliniaux is a very small grower in Ay with just over two hectares in production, of which almost three quarters are Pinot Noir. His Rosé Brut is a Saignée of 100% Pinot Noir. There's also an oaked version (Brut Rosé Fut de Chêne), but I found the unoaked version to be more fitting as an apéritif and later for dessert, which was vanilla ice cream with fresh raspberries. This went very well with the dessert. It's not the most complex Rosé Champagne, but really quite good.

100% Pinot Noir. Rosé de Saignée. A colour like salmon that has been cooked for 2 seconds. Fine bubbles. In the nose, there are raspberries, lemon and a very interesting nose of crustaces (lobster bisque). Fresh and pretty. On the palate, the bubbles are very fine, it's quite fresh, a bit sweet, lemony. The finish is nutty. Very nice.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

For the coq au vin, we started with 1993 Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots. I should have pulled the bottle from the shelf earlier since it still seemed to have a little sediment in it (the colour was quite cloudy). It was very good to drink though, especially with some air time. We then continued with 1996 Robert Sirugue Vosne-Romanée, my last bottle out of five. While I was a big fand of Sirugue's 1997 Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny "Les Mombies", I never really got warm with the 1996 VR, which was always a bit too sour and edgy for my taste. This last bottle was quite good though and I wished I still had one bottle to look into in another year. We then finished with the 2004 Jean-Marc & Hughues Pavelot Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses, which was a bit young still, but already decent to drink. I picked up some green notes, which were just agreeable though. The very earthy character of the wine needed some getting used to, but it really drank quite well.

My last of five bottles. Colour almost without signs of age, dense cherry red. In the nose, this has a sea breeze note (salty air), some oyster shell, black cherry and an underlying earthy floor note. On the palate, it's a bit tart with gentle tannins, but a very prominent acidity. Slightly edgy, but turns the corner towards the finish. My five bottles have been variable, but this last bottle was one of the best.

Fairly light crimson colour with brownish, watery edges. Slightly cloudy. In the nose, fairly strong notes of age (orange peel and juice), but those blew off with some aeration. Then it got finer and finer. A very nice black truffle note in the nose, red berries (red currant, raspberry), earthy notes. Very fragrant. On the palate, the tannins are a bit edgy, fine acidity, there's sufficient substance, but it's fading. Nice sweetness and - again - black truffle notes in the medium-long finish. Good, but time to drink it up.

Full cherry red. In the nose with strong earthy notes (like lying face down on a soccer pitch), slightly green notes (smells almost like grape stems), but also a beautiful underlying fruit (raspberry, red cherry). Floral notes as well. On the palate, it's got a slightly stinging acidity, fine fruity sweetness, an immediate attack. Finely woven. Earthy in the finish. Seems ok to drink, but further cellaring should be beneficial.
