Grgich Hills vinery visit

Introduction

A library sit-down tasting at the vinery. My favorite red was '06 estate cab -- a well balanced and nuanced wine that I preferred to a more aggressive and priicier '09 Yountville wine. In addition to the wined below, we also tasted '10 Zinfandel and a Croatian red grown by the estate. I did not find either wine appealing -- they both were showing lean, out of balance and simply not terribly interesting.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White
2010 Grgich Hills Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasting of a succulent green apple. Mineral and long, with hints of wood, reminiscent of another Napa chard that I used to like -- a youthful Montelena.
Red
2006 Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
My favorite wine in this tasting. Already fully evolved wine, with nutty, dusty cedar notes. The fruit is delicate and complex, showing tabacco, lavender, reminiscent of a balanced mature bordeaux. Hints of flowers in the finish. Silky smooth, and perfectly balanced, a Savile Row suit -- elegance and pedigree all in one lable. For a rainy '06 season, this wine is showing very well.

Red
2009 Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville Selection USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
A more typical, fruit forward, big Napa cab. The oak is forward, and youthful, extrated, and spicy juice overalayed with creamy vanilla flavors is a bit overbearing at this time. Certainly would lay this wine down to come to a more attractive balance.
White
2011 Grgich Hills Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
A flowery, acacia nose. The wine is crisp, acidic and refreshing with hints of citrus, grapefruit.
