Introduction

Reknowned boutique Santorini wine-maker Haridimos (Harry) Hatzidakis presented the wines of one of his favorite white wine producers.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2012 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling France, Alsace
91 points
An entry-level riesling from a top producer, and as the rule has it, this is on par with other producers' top offerings. Light yellow-green. Tart apple, ginger, citrus fruit and stony minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied with vibrant fruit and high acidity. Satisfying aftertaste. Will improve over the next couple of years.
White
2011 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl France, Alsace
93 points
Quite tight and focused at this stage with noticeable flinty minerality, pain-grille, tart apple, lime, pineapple composte and herbs. Medium-bodied with high acidity and a long aftertaste. Needs at least 3 years to start unwinding.
White
2011 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
93 points
Texture is somewhat looser here compared to the Clos Windsbuhl and if I had to chose one of these two to open right now, this would be my choice. That being said the wine is still VERY young and focused. The nose displays aromas of flinty minerality, pineapple and citrus fruit. On the palate it is medium-bodied with compact fruit, somewhat more expressive than the Clos Windsbuhl. Acidity is high and the aftertaste is almost endless. A future classic.
White
2011 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
94 points
Candied lime, stony minerality and scents of pineapple on the tight nose. Medium to full-bodied, mouth-coating and noticeably sweater than the previous rieslings (residual sugar is 6.4 g/l here, vs. 4.3 for the Clos Windsbuhl and 3.6 for the Brand), ultra-concentrated fruit, high acidity and an endless aftertaste. Still a baby.
White
2011 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg France, Alsace
91 points
Shy nose with green apple, pear, Alsatian herbs (rubarbe). Full-bodied with noticeable alcohol (15.5%) and sweetness, oily-textured with balancing acidity and a long aftertaste.
White
2011 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
92 points
This is a baby-monster of 15.6% alcohol and 5.5 g/l residual sugar, while its pH is as high as 3.7. Golden color with a sweet nose of baked apple and pear composte. Full-bodied, dense and oily-textured with noticeable alcohol, low acidity and sweetness, but strangely it does not show heavyness or flabbyness. Very long aftertaste.
White
2012 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer France, Alsace
90 points
Explosive nose with tropical fruits like mango, lychee, passion fruit alongside florality and grapey elements. Full-bodied with low acidity and a long aftertaste. Very typical and solid gewurz.

It is great fun to taste these wines, especially when a top Greek producer presents the work of an admirable French colleague.
