WES - Priorat & Monsant

LSE Holborn

Tasted October 10, 2013 by hadwin with 381 views

Introduction

The once-neglected vineyards of Priorat and its satellite district Monsant, high in the hills south of Barcelona, have seen massive investment in recent years and are now very much in fashion. Unctuous whites and full-bodied reds - great wines for autumn drinking.

Led by Vivienne.

Dark and intense. Black fruits with some perfume. Strong vanilla sweetness on the nose. Soft, smooth, spicy, black pepper, earthy, beetroot sweet.
Red

Very intense - almost black. Big nose, intense black fruits with some sweet spice. Intense on the palate, bright, soft tannins, sweet fruit, good acidity - flirtatious!
Red
2005 La Perla del Priorat Priorat Noster Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Still quite intense but some colour change. Elegant developed nose with some polish with sweet baked fruits. Nice balance on the palate with good fruit, acidity and firm ripe tannins.
Red
2008 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Vella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
86 points
Intense colour with some signs of age - slightly garnet. Quite a spicy nose but not much fruit - quite difficult. Rich, sweet fruit, tannins still a little separate - not quite balanced.
Red
1999 Bodagas Bordalás García Priorat Gueta Lupia Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Black. Vegetal nose with almost a saltiness. Surprisingly light on the palate, balanced but subdued - black sweet fruits still present on the farewell.
