Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
97 points
Green apple, touch of toast, orange peel, touch of earth and florality with some lemon and pear. Flat out beautiful palate - the acidity gives the wine superb tension while letting the rich fruit shine. Builds and builds across the palate, finishing extremely long. Stunning.

White
1997 Penfolds Chardonnay Yattarna Australia, South Australia
88 points
Caramel oak, with some sea spray and a light sherry character than may suggest this bottle was just starting on the downward slope. The wines richness shows through on the palate, almost overwhelming power but there is a pure fruit character that kicks in on the finish and it finishes quite fresh.

I think the quality of this wine is obvious, hopefully there are better bottles out there.
Red
2008 A Tribute to Grace Wine Company Grenache Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
89 points
Cherry, strawberry, spice, stalk and a touch of earth with a lifted VA character. The palate shows plenty of sweet and extremely pretty fruit, however a little hit of alcohol that stands out is an issue. Drink now probably while the fruit is still so appealing.

White
2008 Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu La Chambée France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
90 points
Pepper with a herbal edge, white peach and some complex cheesy funk - with time showing more apricot. Medium viscosity on the palate, it holds itself back and a brief flash of that herbal note shows through as well, which I did like.
Red
1993 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
90 points
Charcoal, cherry, redskins and musk with subtle oak still present. High toned red fruit on the palate, there is plenty of grip and texture, though overall you feel that it needs much more time to evolve. Clearly very good, but very much in need of patience.
Red
2011 Abbotts & Delaunay Carignan Alto Stratus France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Minervois
91 points
Served blind. Purple edged. Floral and bay leaf aromas with toasty vanilla oak and blueberry. Inky fruit asserts itself on the palate, there is a glycerol silkiness that really comes across. Finishes bright and intense. Has similarities to the 2010 but has a bit more interest and potential to age in my opinion/
Red
1996 Bannockburn Shiraz Range Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Geelong
88 points
Iron, smoke and plenty of stalky undergrowth. Fairly resolved on the palate, with the remnants of tannins lightly there. The acid may be fading a bit and the wine is rather soft around the edges as a result - a touch of acid and fruit brightness would lift it but I think it is holding well and I liked it more than the last time I encountered it.
Red
2007 The Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 19th Meeting Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
87 points
Heavy oak presence, light perfume and blackberry. The mid palate has a feeling of hollowness. The fruit definitely needs more depth. Was better with the food but it still couldn't lift it beyond decent.
White - Off-dry
1990 Kuentz-Bas Pinot Gris Cuvée Caroline Vendange Tardive France, Alsace
90 points
Light gold coloured. Pear and spice, light honey and lemon. The sweetness is quite light and it integrates nicely with some good acidity. Not overly complex but will hold for some time.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2012 Framingham Noble Riesling New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
91 points
Lifted floral notes on the nose, with orange peel, some funky aromas and lemon. The sweetness on the palate is well balanced and even though each time I came back to it, the sweetness seemed a bit more prominent, it continued to feel well balanced overall. Should age fairly well over say 7-8 years.
