Private Dinner

New York, NY

Introduction

I decided on a Tuscan theme for this year's Valentine's Day dinner. My fiancé and I took a fantastic trip to Tuscany a few years ago and have always had a fondness for the food and wine from that region. Everything that I prepared and served came from Tuscany.

Flight 1 - Main Course (1 note)

Served with pappardelle bolognese. I suppose that to be truly authentic I would have served pappardelle with a wild boar ragu, but our preference is for the slightly sweeter and more tender bolognese. The rustic bread was accompanied by Montevertine's own extra virgin olive oil.

On opening, whiffs of cedar and earth followed by bright red fruits, with sweet, tart cherries and rocking acidity on the palate. After two hours, a black cherry aroma and flavor dominates, accompanied by truffle, dried violets, and of course damp earth and dried leaves. Slight candied strawberry on the finish. This shows no sign of age, and is in fact far more primary than the 1998 I've had on a few occasions over the last year. Rated 2 on a scale of -1 to 3.

Flight 2 - Dessert (1 note)

Served solo and then with simple biscotti—the classic pairing.

White - Sweet/Dessert

Rusty caramel in color with an orange-yellow glow at the edge. This has the aroma, flavor, and consistency of maple syrup. Caramel, roasted hazelnuts, and preserved apricots are just a few of the factors at play here. However, calling this a wine is a stretch: it's extremely cloying and difficult to drink more than the smallest pouring. Remember to brush your teeth after indulging. Rated 0 on a scale of -1 to 3.
