Piemonte OL: Roberto Voerzio

La Morra

Tasted November 8, 2006 by Barbara B with 601 views

Introduction

Great visit with Roberto Voerzio. First in the vineyard (Barbera vines outside the winery), he explained his philosophy: green harvest, no more than 5 bunches and 800-900 grams or less per vine (seems like it should be per bunch, but he said per vine). He can harvest a few weeks earlier than other growers because of all the vineyard work. In spite of earlier harvest, he achieves 14-15% alc, yet a lot more elegance than that would suggest. Uses half the permitted amount of SO2. Dolcetto needs filtering, but none of the others is filtered. No wine in 2002.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2004 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Barrel tasting: Rich, full, concentrated, sapid, muscley. Love it. Must try again at release.
Red
2004 Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Barrel tasting: So fruity (plums, berries) and floral! Lovely. Must try again at release. Will be outstanding.
Red
2004 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Barrel tasting. Most astringent of the 2004 barrel samples, but the tannins had a beautiful fine powdery texture. Another muscley one.
Red
2003 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Bottle sample: Completely different. Flowery, powdery. [Why didn't I take better notes?]
Red
2001 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Rich, full, long, complex, muscley, great. [skimpy notes]
