Upper House Dining

Göteborg

Introduction

A great dinner at this new restaurant in Sweden's second city, Göteborg. Magnificent view over the city from the 23th floor where this stylish restaurant is situated.

The menu consisted of the following items (my notes are few and hardly legible):
- numerous appetizers
- smoked mackerel with chive as sauce or juice
- carrot, beetroot and various other vegetables
- a kind of bread baked on a hot stone at the table (accompanied by beer: Poppel's American pale ale)
- white asparagus with a kind of shrimp
- turbot and chanterelles
- sweetbreads and a farce
- ... first dessert ('yellow cream' says my notes?) accompanied by Prunotto moscato d'Asti 2013
- strawberries as puré, soup and crisp

Surely, this meal deserved at least one star. I especially liked the emphasis on vegetables and the fact that most of the wines were white.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2012 Domaine Franck Millet Sancerre Insolite France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
This seemed to me to be extraordinarily soft and rich for a Sancerre, with flavours of butter, white fruits and lemon. Atypical.
White
2010 Wenzel Furmint Vogelsang Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland
I don't know if it should have had more air, but it had a most extraordinary aroma of turpentine and hay. On the palate it shows high acidity and is very dry. Interesting and challenging, definitely a food wine.
White
2012 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
Should have had more air or more years, nevertheless an excellent wine, dry, precise, meaty, with emerging complexity, surely with aromatical resemblances to Keller's Westhofen wines.
White
2006 Domaine de Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
This was really extraordinarily good and beat even the preceding Wittman Morstein GG: A harmonious, expansive wine with a creamy texture, it showed all that is great in a mature white Burgundy.
Red
2005 Dureuil-Janthial Mercurey France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey
Spicy Burgundy with iron and minerals, rather than luxurious softness. Quite good.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Wenzel Ruster Ausbruch Am Fusse Des Berges Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland
Beautiful rich nose with botrytis in abundance, and a taste to match. Wonderful.
