Introduction

Thanks to James for having a couple folks over for the game. Loved the wine that was opened...lots of geeky stuff.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

Rosé
2012 Forlorn Hope Pinot Gris Rosé Kirschenmann USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

Lots to like about this "rose". I use quotes because it felt more like an orange wine to me. Semantics, I suppose. Deep nose of spices, orange, some peach, and tangerine. The palate was layered and complex...some apple, pear, orange rind, and spices. Beautifully composed...
Orange

Was really into this wine. Some marmalade, orange rind, minerals, and floral notes. Lots of zippy acidity on the finish that kept this really fresh and engaging.
Red
2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

I hadn't had this in a while, and I really like where this is heading. The aromas were gorgeous; some damp earth, red floral notes, crushed stones, and red berries. The juiciness of the vintage is still there, but the fruit seemed to have more of an earthy edge this time around. Love the direction this is headed.
Red
2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée 3.14 France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

A real bruiser! Lots of red fruits, some forest floor, and spice. This is going to be really good with more time...but it's pretty tight at the moment. Great potential.
Red
2006 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir San Mateo County USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County

Still a big fan of this wine. Love the elegance and complexity it had with layers of red fruit and soft floral accents. The mid palate had this awesome spicy note with a kick of acidity that created a really enjoyable package. I hadn't had this wine in about a year and it seems to consistently great.

Young and powerful, there's a lot of potential here. Dark fruits, some spice, and floral notes layered together nicely. This will probably need some time to open up some, but all signs are pointing towards a beautiful bottle of wine.
Red
1985 E. Guigal Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
92 points
You gotta love these older Guigal wines. This one seemed timeliness, almost like you're looking through a time portal as you raise the glass to your lips. There was a lot of tobacco, dark fruits, earth, and ash. Unapologetically rustic, this is what I miss the most with modern day Hermitage. Beautiful old bones.
Red
N.V. Frank Cornelissen MunJebel Rosso 7 Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
A tough bottle of wine to like. Lots of stink on the nose and layers of cheesy, veggy flavors throughout the wine.

White - Off-dry
1990 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

A kick ass bottle of wine. Aromas of lychee, peach, mango, and orange rind. The palate was edgy, deep, and layered. Peaches, (more) lychee, petrol, and spice were woven together beautifully. In a great spot!
White - Off-dry
2005 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe

Beautiful aromas of peaches, mangos, spice, and lychee. The palate was razor sharp and focused with a beautiful bouquet of florals, tropical fruits, and truffles. Yum.

Lots to like here with red berries, some strawberries, and cream. Palate was sharp and edgy with good mineral cut and creamy strawberries. Pretty good stuff!
