Introduction

Another sit down tasting and dinner for $65 with Wayne from wine-ark...this time with Eden Road - I have a bottle of the 09 Shiraz so I was interested in seeing the rest of their range after trying them in 2011.

Flight 1 - Bracket one - Roasted cauliflower, Jannei goats curd, chestnut honey, pickled quince (2 notes)

worked well - fresh and clean tasting dish that worked particularly well with the Courabrya (which is from a higher, cooler site, made in a less interventionist style) and not so well with the Maragle (lower site, malolactic, oak).

White
2013 Eden Road Chardonnay Courabyra Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Aromas of lemon, citrus, lemon and lime peel, slight wet stone/mineral note, touches of lemon curd as well…and, with time, slight peach notes. In the mouth there flavours of lemon citrus, juicy, medium plus acid, zesty, tangy, long, youthful, very long in fact, slight alcohol warmth but very good.
White
2013 Eden Road Chardonnay Maragle Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
Aromas of toast, slight butter, toasted nuts (almonds?) over smoke and very muted fruit - hints of grapefruit and peach, floral top notes. In the mouth oak water dominates grapefruit, spice, butter…mid palate grip, slight drying quality, alcohol warmth. Hmm. Bit disjointed and young but still has a long finish that carries very low intensity fruit.

Flight 2 - Bracket two - Bonito cured ocean trout, wasabi peas, pomelo, sea spray, shiso (2 notes)

very pleasant - the wasabi peas were crushed carefully and offered more texture than taste. The wines went okay with this dish - the Tumbarumba is made from the best stuff that wasn't made into the Courabrya and Maragle and then whatever is left is in the Long Road. The winemakers honesty and lack of candour was almost as refreshing as the Courabrya or the Tumbarumba Chardonnays.

White
2012 Eden Road Chardonnay Tumbarumba Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Tumbarumba
medium minus aromas of lemon curd, toast, slight butter, mineral hints and slight sweet spice notes. In the mouth the wine is zesty with a juicy lemon tang, some toast notes, slight mid palate grip and a mouth coating quality, fruit carries long. Mmm. niceish
White
2012 Eden Road Chardonnay The Long Road Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
Slightly confected peach and stone fruit, slight dusty quality, slight sulphur. In the mouth there was tart peach over grapefruit, zesty, mid palate grip, medium minus length. A little short. Meh.

Flight 3 - Bracket three - Beef short ribs, black pepper, heirloom carrots, crusty baguette (2 notes)

Stonking stuff. Big lump of meat and superb shiraz material . Both of these wines matched this very well.

Red
2012 Eden Road Shiraz Canberra Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
medium plus intensity aromas of berry and cherry, black over green pepper, quite sweet fruit, and black olives. In the mouth the wine is juicy, blackberry and pepper with cherry notes. The front of mouth tannic grip and slight alcohol warmth join on the long finish...balanced, intense, very nice.
Red
2012 Eden Road Syrah Gundagai Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Gundagai
Medium minus intensity aromas of minerals, blackberry and green peppercorn, slight spice, a dusty earthy quality. Quite perfumed. In the mouth there is slightly tart black berry over black pepper, drying find tannic grip. Touch of alcohol warmth encroaches on finish. Bit meh for me.

Flight 4 - Bracket four - a washed rind cheese (called the Mountain Man), quince & mustard paste, warm bread and lavosh (2 notes)

The washed rind was from a little producer in Victoria - http://www.lartisancheese.com.au/our-cheese.html - it was nice enough but I'd have preferred something either harder or creamier.

Red
2011 Eden Road Shiraz The Long Road Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
Muted green and black pepper and charcuterie plate with black berry and currant fruit. In the mouth there is medium plus acidity, black pepper and spice, fine tannin…it's a little short but other than that very nice.
Red
2012 Eden Road Shiraz The Long Road Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
medium minus aromas of black berry and cherry, dusty spice, slight balsamic and beetroot elements. In the mouth there are flavours of black berry and black pepper spice, powdery mid palate tannic grip. tiny green notes. Bit of alcohol warmth on the medium plus finish.

Closing

That 1st Chardonnay was very good - white of the night so to speak - followed by the Tumbarumba. The Canberra Shiraz was very good as well.
