Flight 1 - Warm ups (3 notes)

White
2012 Domaine les Grands Bois Viognier Côtes du Rhône Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
88 points
The first of our blind warm ups for the group tonight. Lots of florals with peach blossom and honey undertones. Honeyed peach and pear nectar flavors with bright underlying acidity and a nice finish. Lovely and pretty. 88-89 pts.
White
2009 André et Michel Quenard Vin de Savoie Chignin-Bergeron Les Terrasses France, Savoie, Vin de Savoie Chignin-Bergeron
85 points
Nowhere near as good as previous bottles, so hopefully this was just in a bad phase or an off bottle. Rich, waxy texture with melon, lanolin and citrus qualities and a bit of an odd funky quality.
White
2010 Truchard Roussanne USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Last in our flight of blind warm ups. Light color with loads of mineral and white fruit. Good acidity; bright and lively.

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2000 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir The Famous Gate USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
86 points
Faded color with notes of sour, tart cherries and bouillon. Better on the palate with cherry and forest floor qualities. Light; definitely older; off vintage. Guessed old OR Pinot.
Red
2011 Garcia Schwaderer Pinot Noir Special Selection Chile, Casablanca Valley
Opens with a note of burnt rubber, followed by cherry and red fruit. Smells like a f'ing Pinotage. Better on the palate- bright red fruit- cherry and cranberry, with structure and vanilla. I settled on Chilean Carmenere.
Red
2001 Peju Province Winery Petit Verdot USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
86 points
Bouillon and sous bois aromas, stewed & sour. Damn, this is a poor flight. Medium-bodied on the palate, featuring flavors of dark fruit and forest floor. Guessed Napa cab blend.
Red
1987 Sterling Vineyards Reserve Red Table Wine USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Faded crimson color with notes of iodine, followed by an herbal, weedy quality. Soft on the palate with flavors of red currants and forest floor with weedy/vegetal undertones. Th efruit turns slightly sour on the finish. Adds a green pepper flavor; unripe Cabernet. Guessed old CA cab blend.
Red
2009 Rosenblum Cellars Zinfandel Rockpile Road Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
Aromas of blue fruit, dark fruit and pine sap. Medium-bodied with flavors of red fruit dominating, also some spice. Ends with a candied quality. I was all over the place reaching for a guessw ith this one, but Zinfandel never entered my mind.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2009 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Rockpile USA, California, Sonoma County, Rockpile
And the second flight starts off where the first left off with another odd one, opening with citrus, grapefruit and red fruit aromas. Tannic and firm, with flavors of vanilla, red fruit and spice. The citrus notes never blew off. I guessed S. American cab.
Red
2005 Seven Hills Winery Petit Verdot McClellan Estate Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
90 points
Iodine and green, herbal qualities. Lovely red and dark fruit with a long finish tinged by herbs and iodine qualities. Balanced and pretty. Some guessed Bordeuax, but I thought this was a companion to wine D.
Red
2006 Château L'Arrosée France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Initially a bit reticent with just a bit of dark fruit coming through. Opens to reveal a mix of red and dark fruit, vanilla and earth. Nice finish.
Red
1996 Homewood Zinfandel USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
85 points
A bit candied; red fruit, cherry and cranberry notes. Red fruit and dried leaves on the palate, turning acidic and thin on the finish. Guessed over-the-hill Pinot or perhaps an Italian.
Red
2011 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Marqués de Casa Concha Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto
Citrus, red fruit and underbrush aromas. Sour and slightly acidic; vanilla and red fruit. Guessed S. American cab.

Flight 4 - Reds (4 notes)

Red
1991 Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Jimsomare USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Aromas of iodine, dark fruit and plum. The palate follows the bouquet with added notes of underbrush, red fruit and tobacco. Long, balanced finish. Drinking extremely well right now and should hold for quite a few years.
Red
2010 Villa San-Juliette Petit Verdot USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Vanilla and dark fruit notes dominate. Firm tannins, dark fruit and spice. Nice but nondescript- I had no guess.
Red
2009 Domaine de l'Espigouette (Bernard Latour) Vacqueyras France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras
86 points
Plum and dark fruit dominates with hints of citrus. Pepper and dark fruit on the palate.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Cheneraie Beaumes-de-Venise Cru des Côtes du Rhône France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Beaumes-de-Venise
Tapenade and dark fruit qualities, followed by vanilla and spice tones.

Flight 5 - Nonblind dinner/dessert wines (5 notes)

Red
2004 Detert Family Vineyards Cabernet Franc Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
92 points
Just a brief note. Lovely fruit and balance. Long in the finish.
Red
2009 Château Beauchêne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grande Réserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Cherry, currant and spice; herbal undertones with some pepper and spice mixed in.
Red
2007 Muscardini Cellars Tesoro USA, California, Sonoma County
90 points
Nice red fruit tones with vanilla and spice overtones. The palate follows the bouquet. Nice length and balance here.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château Filhot France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
88 points
Tropical fruits and apricot syrup. Rich viscosity; could use a little more acidity, but pleasant and a nice value.
White - Sweet/Dessert
N.V. Alvear Pedro Ximénez Montilla-Moriles Solera 1927 Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles
92 points
Nutty with pear nectar & caramel tones. Rich & unctuous; delicious. Maple syrup and roasted nuts.
