Dinner at home with C's

Singapore

Introduction

Invited C and his wife for dinner at home during a long week-end. My wife prepared a Wagyu Striploin with salat, and baked some fresh muffins while they were here. C brought an opened bottle of red so I could try my luck blind and I asked him to do the same with the next two reds I had prepared. A fun evening

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2001 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

C brought half of a bottle which had seen some Coravin. Tried double blind. Dark garnet with a translucent rim, earth, ripe dark fruit with a a slight burned note, a touch of pencil lead. Guessed left bank Bdx, 2003, Pauillac or rather St. Julien, and then settled on Montrose 2003, a wine I am yet to try. 93-94
Went back to the little left over at the bottom of the bottle after dinner, and this was showing even better with a now beautifully layered palate. Could also not detect the slight burned bitterness anymore it had immediately upon opening. Outstanding wine. 95-96
Red
2001 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Santa Caterina D'Oro Vigna di Pianrosso Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Decanted 2h in order to show C how good Sangiovese and particularly Brunello can get, and how well it works with steak, and this was a success. Garnet with translucent rim. The wine has a truly beautiful balance, and stays light on its feet despite a medium + body. Medium tannins which worked very well with the steak and a long finish. Unlike some other 01 Brunellos I have had this is very clearly Sangiovese, and the best I have had to date. 95-96
Red
1983 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

PnP - was a bit worried that this might pale in comparison to the two earlier wines but this was a beauty on its own. Dark garnet with slightly browning rim. A very impressive amount of juicy and largely dark fruit, with more air time you got more leathery notes. Resolved tannins and medium finish. Very impressive at age 31.
Red
2006 Château Malescot St. Exupéry France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

After our guests had left, my wife surprised me by saying that all the wines were drunk and she had not had much of them, so pulled the cork on this 06 which I was hoping would be ready to drink without decant. The wine has changed very substantially in the 3 years since my last bottle. Gone is the light, red berried and elegant Margaux. This has now good medium (+) weight, with plenty of fruit at the darker end of the spectrum and strong roasted coffee notes. Fun to drink even if I would not mind the toast to be a bit more absorbed by the fruit. Can drink now but likely more balanced and better in 2 years. 92
