Introduction

Bottles consumed unblinded over the course of the evening. Bottles were drunk in the order listed, and notes written 2 days after the dinner.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
2011 Bacio Divino Cabernet Sauvignon Janzen USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Light in body/structure, yet enjoyable to drink. This cab avoided the vegetal flavors of some unripe 2011's, and is actually fairly fruit forward. However, this lacks mid-palate density and has a short finish. So a decent wine considering the vintage, but a poor QPR.
Red
2010 Château Potensac France, Bordeaux, Médoc
89 points
From magnum.
This took awhile to open up, and had a hard time showing well at this point in its evolution when drunk alongside California cabs and merlots. However, the potential is here. One of the group, who prefers Bordeaux to Napa, loved this wine and it was her WOTN runner-up.
Red
2010 Switchback Ridge Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
WOTN for the group, by far (although most of the group had previous high opinions of this wine).
Silky smooth tannins, yet with enough structure to stand up to an array of food thrown at it. Outstanding.
Red
2010 Roth Estate Merlot USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
88 points
A good merlot at this price point, but not all too memorable.
Red
2012 St. Francis Zinfandel Old Vines Sonoma County USA, California, Sonoma County
84 points
A poor zinfandel - overripe without structure.
Wife - 89, Me - 83.
Red
2010 Rua USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Fruit forward, this was well liked by the group. Similar to my previous note, the lack of structure prevents me from liking this more. An easy drinker!
Wife - 88, Me - 89.
Red
2010 Matchbook Tempranillo USA, California, Central Valley, Dunnigan Hills
87 points
This seemed to be a solid easy drinking California tempranillo at the price point, although not too memorable.

Closing

WOTN was the Switchback Ridge merlot, with a divided vote for #2 -- Potensac, Janzen, or the Roth merlot.
