Introduction

We started tonight with a flight of four Beaux Freres - 99, 00, 01,and 02. A fun group, that overall exceeded expectations. Overall consensus ranking was: 2001, 1999, 2002, 2000. The 01 was a crazy wine that went in and out, and the 99 was in second primarily based on its gorgeous nose. But the 02 was a great wine, that folks also thought might ultimately be the best wine. Again, an interesting flight that we all enjoyed.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
1999 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Yamhill County
Immediately, a nose that was beautiful, really off the charts. Less attractive on the palate versus the nose. Silky texture, a bit of a mineral element, and a bit crunchy. Note of red cherry. Faded after 30-45 minutes. Best of the flight while it was on.
Red
2000 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Yamhill County
Subdued, quieter. Some pepper on the nose initially. A tighter, harsh palate. Standoffish, and a bit dumb. 4th of 4 in everyone's ranking.
Red
2001 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
A very wily wine, that was fascinating in its own way. It moved up and down from folks least favorite, to favorite, and more than once. Initially a reserved nose. On the palate, initially tart and somewhat one dimensional. An herbal element that some liked better than others. Than this wine started to sing, and just got better and better. Ultimately, it was the consensus favorite.
Red
2002 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
The biggest wine of the group. Puppy fat, and showing more oak. Still seems relatively youthful, but is very charming and has a lot of weight. We liked this a lot - ranked #3 tonight - but it may turn out to be the best of the group in a few more years.
