Piedmont -- G.D. Vajra Winery Visit

Tasted November 21, 2014 by swapdoc with 355 views

Introduction

Wonderful hospitality shown by the Vajra family and staff (thank you, Gian Marco). Milena was a gracious and warm hostess from the moment we exchanged our first correspondence. The enthusiasm and the passion for the business was epitomized by Isidoro, whose energy and desire to produce the best the land can offer were simply contagious. If wine was simply an expression of an attitude of the people who put their soul in the product, these wines would be without equal. Clearly the passion and the story here are inspirational to many a wine lover.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
2013 G.D. Vajra Langhe Riesling Petracine Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
One of the first Rieslings in the valley. Unusual, perhaps, but if one thinks of wine's ability to age, Barolo and Riesling are quite alike. Arneis like aftertaste, bit of almond skin, sweeter, touch of peach. Reminiscent of an Alsatian riesling, actually Alsatian rootstock. 10m in steel tanks only, no wood.
Red
2013 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba
Flowers, violets on the nose. Cool, mineral cherry taste, acidic. Tannins in the background.
Red
2011 G.D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba Superiore Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba Superiore
Aromatics of wild berries. Mineral, blend of 2 vineyards, 45-64 yrs old vines, 18m in wood. Long but absolutely approachable now. Good.
Red
2009 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Medicinal aromas, nutty and licorice, dark cherry. Warmer and softer than ’10, some feral aromatics. Not as deep or as long as ‘10.
Red
2010 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Tannic and complex wine, taste of dark cherry, soil, some menthol. Closed aromatically now, wine to lay down.
Red
2010 Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Serralunga grapes, menthol, cherry, cranberry jam. Elegant and tannic, aromatic. Bright, and mineral. Made by G.D.Vajra.
Red
2005 Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Aged in botti grande, aromatic and advanced for its age. Balanced wine with some medicinal aromas – steeped field grasses, wood. Needs another 3-5 yrs to achieve complexity, but seemingly quite advanced already. This '05 was not a G.D. Vajra made wine
Red - Fortified
N.V. G.D. Vajra Barolo Chinato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo Chinato
Mostly '08 fruit. Aromatics of pickle juice, wild berries, brine. Hint of juniper berries, quinine. Medicinal, sweet and extracted digestive.
