Introduction

Giovanni made his annual trip out to the wine bar and showed some of his new vintages.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2013 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Langhe Arneis Vigna Elisa Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Greenish yellow; very pretty floral nose with pear, a little lime zest, almond skin, and a touch of straw; lighter body with just a little more weight, lime, mint, pear skin, almond, refreshing and floral finish; a very good Arneis.
Red
2013 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Dolcetto d'Alba Sorì Paitin Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba
Bright purple with lighter extraction; a little buttery on nose, wild berry, very purple fruit, dark cherry, tart, almost grapey like Gamay, some spice which may be stem though it is not green; soft texture, bright red and purple fruit, easy drinking, soft tannin; good.
Red
2011 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbera d'Alba Serra Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
Darker core with more vibrant violet garnet rim; sandalwood, tobacco, meat, anise, dark cherry, dark red fruit, some herbs; medium minus body, fresh acid, sun dried tomato, ripe blackberry, plum, dark cherry; good.
Red
2010 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbera d'Alba Superiore Campolive Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba Superiore
Dark core with dull light garnet rim; mint, sandalwood, sour dark cherry, leather, menthol, more density than the '11 Serra; cherry, plum, more red fruit, menthol, slight tar, sandalwood finish; very Piemontese, tasty.
Red
2012 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Red crimson core with onion skin rim; sharp rose and red cherry, dried fruit, hints at cinnamon, sour plum, incense; fuller palate, soft entry and round, strong sour red cherry, hints at orange oil, red apple skin, some dryness from the tannin but not bad, leather on finish; good.
Red
2009 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Darker core with garnet rim; sandy nose with wilted rose, mint, red cherry, red currant, plum, some sun dried fruit; softer texture, round with dark cherry plum and currant, good depth and complexity from bottle age, leather on finish; good, sadly there will be no more Cabernet in the blends as it was cut out and Barbera was grafted onto the roots.

Closing

Paitin makes some really great wines. Even though we didn't taste any higher end bottlings these "entry" level wines really show you their attention to detail and expertise.
