Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
1994 Matanzas Creek Winery Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Sonoma County
flawed
(Tasted Blind, Wine A) Very heavy bricking. Nose is exclusively soy, prunes, old wet rancid leather. Calling this maderized.
Red
1994 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
90 points
(Tasted Blind, Wine B) Pours a fairly deep opaque ruby with minimal bricking. So much mint/eucalyptus on the nose. Also, dark cherry, spice, cigar box and black currants. This has aged slowly and is still leaning primary. On the palate; dusty tannin, medium minus acid with excellent dark fruit presence. Generally Bordeaux like but with more mint/eucalyptus and a slightly darker more primal fruit profile. Good. My #3, the Groups #1.

1994 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley

(Tasted Blind, Wine C) Very young in appearance and aroma. Very little bricking with a deep ruby core. Lots of deep dark fruit, edging on overripe. The nose reveals some light spice, vanilla, coconut and rasins. There is evident oak here that hasn't totally integrated at this juncture. Palate is dark fruited replaying the somewhat overripe notes. Guessed that this must be Silver Oak and was indeed correct. My #6, the Group's #2.
Red
1994 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
91 points
(Tasted Blind, Wine D) Moderate bricking. The nose is heading a little more rustic and savoury on this with aromas of animal fur, dark savoury cherry, plum and undergrowth. There is a bit of a Merlot thing on the nose and palate with pronounced plush plum notes. The palate has moderate remaining tannin and moderate acid. Quite liked this. Never did hear the exact final blend on this, but as I understand it there is a significant portion of Merlot. My #2, the Group's #4.
Red
1994 Galante Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rose Hill USA, California, Central Coast, Carmel Valley
88 points
(Tasted Blind, Wine E) This pours fairly dark with a touch of bricking at the rim. It's centered on intensely concentrated fruit in the more classical California idiom. The nose is of violets, blueberry compote, blackberry pie filling, alcohol and creme de cassis. A well made and not overripe wine, though stylistically not really what I look for in a Bordeaux blend. I would like to see more non-fruit aromas, especially at 20+ years of age. The elevated tannin on this wine seems to indicate it has acted to preserve and keep the wine youthful. The finish is medium in length with alcohol noted. My #5, the Group's #5.

1994 Matanzas Creek Winery Journey USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
flawed
(Tasted Blind, Wine F) Essentially identical to Wine A.
Red
1994 Galante Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Blackjack Pasture USA, California, Central Coast, Carmel Valley

(Tasted Blind, Wine G) Pours deep and primal with a touch of bricking at the rim. The nose on this wine is quite pretty, and exuberantly fruit forward. Similarly to Wine E the nose is centered on plum, blackberry, blueberry pie filling, mixed florals and some smoky elegantly integrated oak. This come across a tad merlot like and has aged slowly. The palate is quite plummy with elevated tannin similar to Wine E which seems to have acted to preserve the wine. My #4, the Group's #6.
Red
1994 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
(Tasted Blind, Wine H) Pours lightly translucent with moderate plus bricking. The nose on this wine reveals lovely brown mixed spices, animal fur, leather, tobacco, hair spray (in a good way), dark cherry, dried black currants and undergrowth. Tastes and smells like a lovely old classified growth bordeaux. Admittedly there is a touch of Brett on this wine which I'm sure turned some people off. the palate has touch of dusty tannin remaining with moderate acid and a medium plus finish of spices, leather and cherry fruit. This is a savoury, spicy old leather driven wine and I loved it. My #1, the Group's #3.
