Loire Tasting

Introduction

Time for the Bi-monthly "Weird Grapes" tasting. This time it was decided to focus on an area and to just have some fun. No weird, natural wines, just some "proper" wine. The effect of this was noticable - we ended up much more drunk than the previous 2 nights as the alcohol levels were slightly higher and every bottle that we opened we finished (appart from 1 corked and 1 oxidised wine)

Flight 1 (10 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Guy Charlemagne Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Réserve Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Great way to start. This is classy and elegant and so easy to drink. Touch of bread, refined bubbles. Only downside was that we were drinking from a bottle rather than a magnum...
White
2002 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre La Grande Côte France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Good wine, but its not my style, hence the lower than expected rating. Veggie soup nose, lots of ripe goosberry. Very Fat. I think the first glass was a bit too warm as the the 2nd was tighter and had a bit more tension. Long finsh.

Good colour, but oxidised, just like the previous.

A little bit of candyflos on the palate, but otherwise this is stonking, Its the nose thats the killer at the moment - 5* - with lovely seductive minerality. Still has some puppy fat that it needs to loose and its just a bit too exotic in the mouth. Give it 5 years and this will be brilliant
Red
2011 Domaine de la Charmoise Gamay Touraine Vinifera Non Greffées France, Loire Valley, Touraine
88 points
Typical Gamay nose, but its a lot warmer and richer than I was expecting. Tannins seem resolved and there are some strawberries in amongst the cherries. Not the same as a Beaujolais and its definitely more concentrated. Good stuff, easy to drink and given the modest price, its a bit of a bargain
Red
2005 Patrice Colin Coteaux du Vendômois Vieilles Vignes France, Loire Valley, Coteaux du Vendômois

Wine of the evening. Nose that shows hints of animal mourvedre and ceder. Perfect to drink now and the marriage of the crunchy acidity, the complexity and the fruit remind me a lot Trevallon - a baby version of the 89 ?
Red
2004 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Step up in class and concentration here. Touch of brett on the nose, which we all took as a plus, rather than a minus. Underneath there is a deep layer of fruit. Blind I would have swore that this was a high quality burg from a warm year,. Great balance and the black cherry flavour has a touch of smoke to it. First experience of a red Rougeard, and it was very positive. Shame that the price has gone a bit mad though.
White - Off-dry
1996 Confrérie des Vignerons Oisly & Thésée Sauvignon Blanc Vendanges Tardives France, Loire Valley, Touraine

Very similar to the Cotat from earlier, except for the fact that this is a lot sweeter. Again green veg and gooseberry in the nose, with a touch of elderflower. Not oversweet. Silky texture. Bit spoilled being so near the end and this would be great with a chunk of gooseliver.
Red
1996 Fery-Meunier Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Old house, that does not exist any more. Difference of opinion here. I though it was old and over the top, but Burg lover Jelle thought it was complex with beef stock and rosehip flavours.
White
2013 Cederberg Bukettraube South Africa, Western Cape, Cederberg

This was a mistake. At the end of the evening I had free range to pick anything from Mics cellar and really a teapot and some milk would have been the best idea. Still, this is a great wine. Its sweet, lean and modern with a lovely, yeasty finish. This went down way to fast. Score maybe be a bit generous - we were pretty drunk - but not by much. Search out a bottle and try again.
