Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Mumm Napa Brut Rosé
86 points
Light strawberry-copper color. Bright floral nose, lots of toasted baguette and yeasty elements, white cherries, strawberries, notes of chalk and crushed shells. Crisp but creamy, a rich feel on the palate, with red apples and wild strawberries. Notes of sea shells, a glimpse of gingery spice. Fun stuff, not too complex, but very pleasant. 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay.

2014 Starborough Sauvignon Blanc
86 points
Light straw color. Aromas and lemon verbena, grapefruit, white pepper and green beans. Lively acid, moderately creamy, flavors of nectarine and grapefruit mix with spicy white pepper, green herbs and notes of minerals and chalk. Not super complex, but better than many at this price point.

2013 Trinity Hill Pinot Noir Hawke's Bay
87 points
Medium ruby. Nose of bright red currants, black cherries, along with dusty earth, tobacco, some rhubarb and hints of mushroom. Medium-bodied, medium-light tannins, refreshingly tart acid, a dusty, tangy feel to this wine. The red and black cherries and tart red currants are laced with notes of rhubarb, white pepper, roses, hint of balsamic glaze and mushroom. Tart, fun, bright, easy-drinking but not simple. Check this out if you’re tired of high alcohol, toasted oak Pinot Noirs.

2012 Lothian Pinot Noir Vineyard Selection
90 points
Medium ruby color. Nose of tart red currants, raspberries, add in tobacco leaf, black pepper, rose potpourri, rhubarb-spice. Medium-plus-bodied, medium-plus acid, moderate tannins with some softness around the edges. Black cherries add to the juicy red berry fruit. Hints of toast and coffee mix with rose hips, rhubarb, white pepper, soy and spice. Juicy, forward, yet complex and it maintains the elegant appeal. Aged 11 months in 20% new oak. This should cost more than $20.

2012 Bodegas San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud Las Rocas
86 points
Medium ruby. A dusty nose with soil, herbs and pepper topping the bright red currant and raspberry jam. Rich and chewy texture, tannins are accessible but structure the wine, low acid. Black cherries, raspberry jam, the fruit is chewy and a bit candied, but backed up by loamy, dusty, charcoal notes and tobacco. Toasty finish. Fun wine, good value, great for grilling and parties, solid.

2012 Bodegas San Alejandro Garnacha Calatayud Las Rocas Viñas Viejas

Medium ruby. Deeper currants, some black cherries, more soil and charcoal elements than the regular bottling, some tobacco. The tannins seem a bit more structured, still low on the acid, but the black currant, raspberry and black cherry fruit is smooth, not as candied as the regular bottling. The old vine presence is felt in the wine’s velvety, dusty appeal, and the loamy, graphite and iron notes. I get some tobacco and grilled herbs on the finish. Fun stuff, showing some moderate complexity and the potential to develop over the next two years or so.
