Introduction

A dream line-up of mature Barolo along with some Champagne and White Burgundy to start.

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1976 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne
92 points
Fully developed nose with notes of butterscotch and caramel. Palate still retains reasonable freshness. Nice.
White - Sparkling
1981 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut Collection France, Champagne
99 points
From magnum. Flat-out amazing. Had this before and after dinner. Super fresh, crisp and pure at the start with some saline, seashell notes. This got better and better with time and my last sip was the best about 5 hours after opening. Tremendous complexity, depth and intensity with everything in perfect balance. I loved this wine when I had it from 750ml last year but this was a significant step-up with much more freshness and intensity. Absolutely stunning wine in a perfect spot of maturity.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (2 notes)

White
2002 Henri Boillot Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Exuberant and forward with sweet yellow corn custard. Broad and warm in the mouth without being too heavy. Oak is well integrated. Nice.
White
2002 Henri Boillot Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
More reticent than the Batard initially and leaner with more minerality. I preferred this to the Batard – feel like it had more complexity and I liked the cooler, leaner profile.

Flight 3 - '85 Monprivato & a Couple of '89s (4 notes)

Red
1985 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
97 points
Gorgeous. Classic with pure roses and tar. Super young with fairly imposing structure. This will probably last forever but was still a pleasure to drink now. Got better and better with air. WOTF.
Red
1985 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Much softer than the Mascarello with lighter red Pinot-like fruit and hints of cherry medicinal notes on the finish. Best early on and when revisited later in the night this was fading. Still a very nice wine but overshadowed by the Mascarello.
Red
1989 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Black-fruited and loaded with tar. A very dark and dense Barolo. I thought this was excellent though others liked this even more.
Red
1989 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Lots of cola and herbs. While this was not oxidative it came off as more advanced than the other wines in the flight. I don’t believe this was a representative bottle

Flight 4 - Giacosa Santo Stefano Riserva (3 notes)

Red
1964 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Speciale Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
98 points
Beautiful and bright in the glass. Just a gorgeous wine. This was hardly showing its age and was still loaded with sweet cherry fruit. Amazing pleasure to drink
Red
1982 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Darker profile with notes of tar. Tannins are a little bit more woody and drying and just doesn’t have nearly the depth or interest of the two vintages served alongside it.
Red
1989 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
100 points
Stunning wine. Intoxicating nose – I could have just smelled this all night. So layered and complex. Perfectly ripe, sweet cherry fruit. Everything is in the right place here – perfectly harmonious. Unbelievable intensity. Everything I imagine a Barbaresco could be at about 25 years old. I couldn’t get enough of this. The stand-out wine for me in a line-up of stand-out wines. WOTN.

Flight 5 - Giacosa Collina Rionda Riserva (3 notes)

Red
1978 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Speciale Collina Rionda Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
flawed
Sadly this was corked.

Another unbelievable wine. Classic in every way. Incredible balance, texture and complexity. A joy to drink. WOTF.
Red
1990 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Soft, supple, smooth and very easy to drink but without the level of depth or complexity of the other Giacosa red labels. Still quite enjoyable though – I think I liked this more than most.

Flight 6 - Monfortino (4 notes)

Red
1941 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Stravecchio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Not really sure how to describe this. I’m not sure I would’ve guessed this was nearly 75 years old as it wasn’t oxidized or lifeless, but at the same time it wasn’t like any Barolo (or wine for that matter) that I’ve ever tasted.
Red
1961 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Speciale Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
98 points
Another gorgeous mature Barolo. More red-fruited than I would’ve expected from Monfortino. Terrific aromatics and beautifully balanced and elegant in the mouth. A great wine.

Great young Monfortino. Deep, dark and intense. Feels like this is only hinting at its ultimate potential right now. 97+
