Txikito

Introduction

A group of 7 like minded people got together at Txikito to dig deep into their cellars and share some special Rioja's - along with a few ringers.

Flight 1 - 2007 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Blanco (0 notes)

This was quite tasty. great acidity on the finish. a fragrant nose that to me smelled of a nice middle aged burgundy. honeysuckle, quince, hay, florals. Sammy equated this to a high quality White Rhone. Either way, this was wonderful and a great start.

Flight 2 - 1996 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia (0 notes)

This was in perfect shape and condition. A fragrant nose that has so much going on. Honey, Nuts, pitted fruit - peach, nectarine, subtle. then it has some spicy elements - almost anise sneaking through. The taste follows right along with the nose. Very nice finish. proper acidity that embraces and pulls together an amalgam of tasting notes. Tea notes, honeycomb, and white peach - subtle fruit and just too many other things going on. Just damn good juice.

Flight 3 - 1985 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 (0 notes)

This had some brett that became more pronounced with more air, which got in the way. But behind that brett was a mid weight wine with classic sour cherry. The oak has integrated. For me, a disappointing showing.

Flight 4 - 1989 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Gran Reserva (0 notes)

This had a touch of brett as well. this had a bit more noticeable oak. deeper darker rioja profile. tar. tobacco. dark cherries. Nice wine, but the brett was getting in the way for me again. By the way, I was drinking these out of riedel tempranillo glasses. Tasted and smelled through standard riedel restaurant glass - didn't have as much brett.

Flight 5 - 1970 Bodegas Olarra Rioja Gran Reserva (0 notes)

With proper air this blossomed, but initially it had a bit of a maderized note. With air, this receded, but would say this is on the decline. there were some wonderful notes of orange rind, and tea that I get with older rioja's that gave me pleasure.

Flight 6 - 1982 Viña Magaña Navarra Vina Magna Gran Reserva (0 notes)

Blind. I guessed an aged new world Cab blend. This was very fragrant and very much alive and youthful. perfect condition. and very enjoyable. plump and juicy. blue fruits. some rustic notes. When revealed, no one had any clue what this was, but we were all thrilled to be drinking this wonderful find!

Flight 7 - 1994 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia (0 notes)

A baby. So full of itself and ready to grow up to be a superstar. this was tight, and remained tight, but behind that coil is an explosive wine. Strong mineral infused cherries, that lovely orange rind soaked in Tea - damn I love that taste. Floral and tobacco notes singing behind the fruit. I hope I am still alive in 2044 to drink this at age 50.

Flight 8 - 1970 Borlido Garrafeira (0 notes)

Another blind wine. My senses were getting dulled a bit, but this was another special, out of deep left field wine. Excellent condition. perfectly stored. damn what a treat. Not sure what blend was here, but a wine of unknown grapes that was drinking 20 years younger. Just a wonderful tasting experience. Wish I remember what it tasted like, I just know I liked it.

Flight 9 - 1968 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve (0 notes)

Last wine. Thank you Josh for bring this. This was unfortunately past its prime and on its downward slope, but still had glimpses of what this great wine can be.
