La Tour d'Argent

Paris

Introduction

Well, after the last go-round with the disastrous 89 Roumier Bonnes Mares I hadn't made plans to go back. Until the last night in Paris when we were on the bridge between Ile de la Cite and Ile St Louis and saw the dining room from afar... so we decided to walk into La Tour d'Argent - and they had a table! One of the purest pleasures in life is reading their wine list and chewing the fat with Ridgway. I'm glad we did.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Wonderful savories to start - foie gras and pastry dough amuses. Followed by celery root puree with langoustines. Duck breast for the main followed by 36 mo Comte and then chocolate soufle.

Well - this was very briefly magnificent. Tight when poured then quite dramatically blossomed into near archetypical NSG - the red and the black (Stendhal and otherwise), musk, sous-bois, floral. Really, really excellent. But after only a few minutes it receded back into itself and didn't come out again. Still... for those few minutes.

Closing

A wonderful night - my favorite view of Paris is from La Tour d'Argent. Illuminated Notre Dame, Tour St Jacques, Sacre Coeur... it doesn't get much better. I plan on maximizing the frequency of that experience.
