Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2014 Meyer-Näkel Illusion Eins Germany, Ahr
87 points
Rose gold colour; vinous and spicy nose, slate, slightly fishy, hints of fruit, good depth; soft yet fresh on the palate, fruity (strawberry, melon) and quite spicy; decent length. Drink well-chilled.
Red
2013 Meyer-Näkel Walporzheimer Kräuterberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
93 points
Superb nose of glossy ripe Pinot fruit, smoky oak and spicy slate, hint of violets, deep and inviting; the palate is wonderfully juicy, fresh and rich, incredibly supple and easy to drink, with bright acidity and grippy phenolics from both the skins and the oak covered in elegant, firm flesh, it is like drinking liquid satin; complete and layered finish, quite seasoned, very good length.

Red
2013 Meyer-Näkel Dernauer Pfarrwingert Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
93 points
Not nearly as voluptuous or opulent as the Kräuterberg, but the kinship is immediately evident. The minerality is slightly more pronounced, it is more floral too and matbe just a little more precise? The balance is impeccable, the wine is rich yet very elegant, supple yet structured, complete and detailed, more silk than satin. The fruit flavours are very pure but it does not have the grandstanding character of the Kräuterberg - it is more intellectual perhaps, not as inviting but more engaging? A fascinating comparison. The score is the same.
