Flight 1 (8 notes)
White
2014 Jean León Chardonnay 3055
84 points
Generic NW style, also young. Not that much oak, hard candy, candy, not very strong charatcer , non-specific. Ok as an aperitif.
White
2013 Jean León Chardonnay Penedès Vinya Gigi
89 points
Pleasant softness of a zephyr, fresh white bread, creamy peach, elegant. Still young and not that well balanced, it has freshness and sharpness of youth, but will surely integrate.
Red
2011 Jean León Merlot Penedès Vinya Palau
80 points
Overripe, cheap vanilla, round and plush, brutish nose. Nice flowery notes. Jammy and overdone, no backbone of accidity and tannin, nah.
Red
2007 Jean León Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Reserva Le Havre
85 points
Light flowery, violet notes, pleasant restraint after vulgar Palau Merlot. On the palate there is dryness from red currants, aronia, medium body. Good overall freshness, slightly smoky, tobacco as well as dill and hint of marinated patty pan squash.
Red
2003 Jean León Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Gran Reserva La Scala
88 points
Meat, leather, salami, initially reminding of a barolo, poignant. Quite nice a bit dried fruits, figs, some spices, port-like finish. With time becomes more vegetably with boiled carrots appearing. Very good overall.
Red
1996 Jean León Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Gran Reserva
85 points
Dense and meaty. Initially vegetables, cooked onion, some beetroots. Quite full body, dry aronia on the palate. Port-like concentration and dryness, very tannic and dry. Give it time to open up in a decanter. I would also cellar it longer, but quite unsure if/when it will unfurl. Now it is interesting, but too closed, tannic, powerful not that enjoyable.

1982 Jean León Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Gran Reserva
87 points
Quite a bottle variantion here, two out of some 4 bottles that I heard of were corked. Our wasn't, but I didn't really love it, especially compared to a brilliant '81 tried recently. Initially quite a lot of VA, but it whiffs away soon. Orange rind, enticing, mild, touch of CF like vegetality. Light body, fresh, soft fruitiness, lively. But not vibrant enough, seems too mature at this point, it doesn't touch your soul.

1975 Jean León Cabernet Sauvignon Penedès Gran Reserva
92 points
Colour of this wine was darker that that of a '82 that we drank alongside. Nose of Christmas spices, cloves and sweet zephyr. Very fresh, fruity nose of tobacco, flowers, violets and smoked meat. Palate also delivers. Very fine, a WOTN and quite a surprise.
