Sunfish Cellars

Introduction

Damn, I totally spaced this tasting, got a text from a friend wondering where I was, then drove to Sunfish like a madman, to arrive 1 hour late. Luckily they saved me some wines, and I was able to taste all of them. Pol Roger is definitely a solid producer.

Flight 1 - Oops, drinking a cabernet at home.... (1 note)

Red
1991 Michel-Schlumberger Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Purchased about a month ago from WTSO. Clearly in decline. Old oxidized wine. Asked for my money back.

Flight 2 - Pol Roger tasting (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne

This was served in both a champagne flute and a pinot noir glass to compare. Unfortunately, I was late for the tasting and my wines had sat in their glasses for an hour. The large pinot noir glass had made the wine tired, the nose muted. The flute had kept the wine fresh, complex and delicious, likely due to less oxygen exposure. This is a quality NV champagne in the slightly masculine style.
White - Sparkling
2000 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne

A small glass at a tasting. My memory is fuzzy, so forgive the lack of detail. But this clearly differentiated itself as more complex than the NV Pol Roger Brut, and similarly the 2000 Winston Churchill was significantly better.

A small glass at a tasting. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I found an earthy, powerful, almost old world champagne. Yet it remains lively. There is just a hint of strawberry, I might not have guessed Rose if served blind.

My first taste of this, consumed a glass over about 45 minutes. This is a "Wow" champagne. Fantastic, complex, extremely masculine and powerful. I would love to drink a whole bottle.
