Roots Bistro Gourmand

Tasted December 20, 2015 by VDLT Wine with 218 views

Introduction

With Diane & Joel. Enormous portions of complex dishes, combining a mind numbing number of ingredients ncluding a lot of truffle, cheese & horseradish & fruit in everything. Food was fine and service from a young staff unusually good for Long Island. Corkage quoted as $10/bottle or $25/table with tasting menu was charged at $12.50/ but who's quibbling.

Flight 1 - Apps (1 note)

all very tasty & very different:

1) Compressed Eggplant
sunchoke, edamame, dashi, butternut squash

2) Autumn Pasta
chestnut, fontina, butternut squash, sage, truffle

3) Truffled Lamb
pumpkin, walnut, porcini, truffle

White - Off-dry
1990 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
A very special bottle of Riesling at peak performance. Nothing specific to mention. The whole outshone the sum of any parts. Worked with the myriad of dishes we ate.

Flight 2 - Entrees (1 note)

Also an impressive array but the crispy skinned pork stood out

1) Black bass & Prosciutto
sunchoke, date, mitake, potato popcorn, horseradish

2) Octopus
potato, spinach, bacon, gorgonzola, olives, apple

3) Pork Belly
endive, gruyere, apple, porcini, brioche

Red
1994 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
An olive note dominated but did not detract from the pleasure offered by this solid bottle. Strong fruit suggested fuel left in the tank. I recall the bottle a few years ago being better balanced and more complete but this one showed younger.
