Boxing Day 2015

Colorado High Country

Introduction

For Boxing Day, we opened a few Spanish mags from parcels that had been patiently waiting since the 90's.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Balancing the old with the new, we started with a trio of 2012 PYCM.

White
2012 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Started out the night with three bottles of the 2012 PYCM Chenevottes. A touch reduced, but very good juice that was liked by all. I somewhat prefer the 2011 of this wine, but both are winners.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Two incorrect preconceptions on the red flight. First, I was worried that the Pesquera might be problematic, as we've experienced a lot of bottle variation with 91 Pesquera over time. Definitely not the case tonight. Also, we expected the 82 Unico to outperform the 80 Unico. Another expectation shattered.

Red
1991 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Janus Gran Reserva Pesquera Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
From magnum, served as our pre-dinner red. We haven't opened a 91 mag for almost ten years, and the last was a disappointment. This was anything but. Lush silky fruit, and a wine that demanded attention. Very fine wine.
Red
1982 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
From magnum, and served side by side with a mag of 1980. Both were double decanted approximately 90 minutes before dinner. Textbook Unico, and quite lovely.

Red
1980 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
From magnum, and served side by side with a mag of 1982. This mag literally stole the show. Utterly perfect. Deep, rich, complex, and continued to grow over the night. What a pleasant surprise, as we expected the 82 to be the star. Both 82 and 80 were outstanding, the 80 was a rock star.

Red
1982 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
From magnum. We had made it through three mags of Pesquera and Unico, and were still thirsty, so we took a short trip from the Ribera del Duero to Rioja. The 82 mag of Muga was good and in great shape. We liked it, but it's never fair to follow Unico.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Drink more Port!

Red - Fortified
1977 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
We followed dinner with a gorgeous bottle of 77 Taylors. Literally perfection in the bottle. Note to self - drink more Port.
