Dundas, Ontario

Tasted October 24, 2015 by Dave Canada with 400 views

Introduction

Chris came up with the idea of doing a blind tasting of Pinot Noir and sourced a great cross section of vintages, producers and quality levels for this event.

Flight 1 (16 notes)

White
2011 Tawse Chardonnay Quarry Road Vineyard Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Vinemount Ridge VQA
92 points
Nose is a touch muted on first pour but opens to reveal lemon blossom, lemon custard, minerals, and lime. Some oak notes evident but restrained.
Palate shows applesauce, lemon, minerals, custard and lime and is very mineral driven....acid is high.
Finish is long and quite complex. Great wine.
White
2010 Louis Jadot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
flawed
This is rich and quite powerful....aromatically intense...lemongrass, candied lemon, white flowers, sulphur and a lactic note...the sulphur really comes out with time.
Palate is rich....obviously from a ripe vintage. Shows tonnes of alcohol and not enough acid....also some oxidative bruised apple notes that really come out with time.....pre-mox in the house.
White
2013 Calera Chardonnay Mount Harlan USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan
92 points
Oak is quite prominent on the nose...ripe lemon, white flowers, lime....oak is there but not obtrusive....quite pretty.
Palate showcases som very ripe fruit bordering on tropical with some peppermint, butter, caramel and lemongrass.
Finish is lone and sweet....quite complex and layered.

Red
1996 Calera Pinot Noir Reed Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan
93 points
Loaded with menthol, cherry nibs, red fruit, red flowers and stems.....so many stems!....tart red fruit, minerals, wet soil, leather and tobacco. Pretty
Palate shows cherry pit, stems, cigar undertones, cranberry, minerals, cherry nibs, menthol, red flowers, spice, circus and sour cherry.
Finish is long and layered! Almost 94 points
Red
1996 Dominique Laurent Morey St. Denis 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
flawed
This is dirty! Dirt....with some ginger....pickled ginger and tart red fruits. Brett bomb with noticeable VA.
Palate shows moss, earth, prunes and tones of acid.....Heat damage? Clearly not right.
Red
1993 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
flawed
This was an utter disappointment! Dominated by acetone, sugar and balsamic notes......quite volatile.
Not a right bottle.
Red
1990 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Olivet Lane Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
97 points
WOW! Such complexity.....this is singular and complex all at the same time. Red flowers, savoury herbs, red fruit, sandalwood, a touch of brett, blood orange, grapefruit and orange peel.
Palate is svelte......cashmere. Pure red fruit that is tart but also so pure and powerful....flowers, candied flowers, herbs, earth. Mouthful is unreal...such texture. Rosewater, sandalwood and spice dominate the transition to a long, long finish. Just awesome! Almost 98pts
Red
1999 Chehalem Pinot Noir Rion Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
85 points
Peanut shells and quite ripe fruit. Would guess a rhone blend...very little pinot character.
Palate is astringent, course and stewed.
Simple and short
Red
1999 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
flawed
Corked
Red
2001 Arcadian Pinot Noir Sleepy Hollow Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
94 points
This is almost classic...
Nose just jumps out of the glass. Tonnes of stem notes augmented by spice, coriander, pickled ginger and soil.
Palate shows bright red fruit, red flowers, spice, clove, pickled ginger and grapefruit.
Finish is long and spicy with gorgeous red fruit.
Red
2001 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
89 points
Fruit was quite dark here but also quite simple....some glycerine.
Palate has some pure dense fruit but it is a bit viscous and ultimately forgettable.
Finish is simple and medium in length.

Red
2002 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Chorey-les-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
88 points
Nose is quite subdued....with some aggressive swirls you get some mild fruit but overall simple and boring.
Plate shows some candied fruit but does not have sufficient acid and makes this out of balance.
Red
2002 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
92 points
Incense, spice, red fruit, flowers, caramel, resume, sap and stems.
Palate shows pure red fruit, spice, incense, flowers, caramel, leather and great balancing acid.
Finish is long.
Red
2002 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Grèves France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
87 points
Non descript nose.
Palate is ripe but a touch simple....chaulky and medicinal in nature with some cherry cough syrup.
Finish is simple.
Red
1998 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
flawed
Porty, prunes, bruised apple. Oxidized
Red
2004 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Chileno Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
Gorgeous nose of incense, liquid flowers and tart red fruit.
Palate shows menthol, stems, flowers, citrus and pure red fruit. It needs a bit more acid as it is quite ripe....just a touch out of balance.
Finish is medium

Closing

This was unreal....Burgundy was crushed but bottle variation and cork taint took a few burgs that could have really shined. A great night!
