Introduction

There was no theme. Every participant brought one or two bottles fully blind. The idea is to go from light bodied and/or old to full bodied and/or young. So randomly someone tells he/she wants to start with the first wine. Then the rest follows when he/she thinks it is a proper moment to pour a wine you brought. And surprisingly enough this system works quite well in most cases. There are no flights. We tasted the wines one at a time.

Flight 1 (17 notes)

White
2008 Schäfer-Fröhlich Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Trocken Germany, Nahe
87 points
Beautiful and pure bouquet. Citrus, pear, melon, apricots, minerals and some spiciness. Not extremely complex, but a beautiful and refreshing wine.
Red
2009 Mayu Sangiovese Chile, Elqui Valley
81 points
Light red. The bouquet is closed and hard to describe. A lot of supple and soft impressions in the mouth; soft cherries and other red fruits, soft tannin, firm amount of sweetness and some lactic impressions. A lot of bitterness. The alcohol is showing. Tasting this blind it was impossible to detect it was sangiovese. Not really impressive.
Red
2010 Domaine Saint Germain Mondeuse Vin de Savoie France, Savoie, Vin de Savoie
80 points
Dark red with a purple rim. The bouquet reminds partly of Gamay and Cabernet Franc and is a bit dusty. (I was not the only taster who wrote this down.) On the palate cherry candy stick and lactic impressions. Does this wine get macération carbonique? Some bitterness as well. Very fruit forward. So in this blind tasting I thought it was a Beaujolais or Savoie Gamay, but it was Mondeuse; a grape on its own. Never tasted before as far as I can recall. Interesting but nothing special considering the wine.
Red
2008 Domaine des Baumard Anjou Logis de la Giraudière France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou
81 points
Transparent red color. Paprika and red cherries in the bouquet. On the palate light and frivolous. There is some paprika, soft acidity and tannin. Supple red fruits in this very easy going wine. Ok wine, but very disappointing considering the producer.
Red
2006 Felton Road Pinot Noir Calvert New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
85 points
Very light, not really impressive bouquet. In the mouth ripe red fruits and some spiciness. Juicy and fruity with pleasant acidity. Ready now.
Red
2011 Que Mas Cabernet-Merlot Chile, Central Valley
82 points
Spicy bouquet with some licorice and flowers. Also flowers on the palate, primary mainly red forest fruits and candy acidity. Supple tannin. Round and easy going wine.
Red
2009 Dourthe Bordeaux Grands Terroirs France, Bordeaux
82 points
Mainly cherries in the bouquet. On the palate there is acidity and slightly firm tannin, but overall this is a one-dimensional and simple wine.
Red
2005 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Merlot Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
83 points
Creamy and some cherries in the bouquet. On the palate chocolate, a touch of menthol and a firm amount of bitterness. Basic.
Red
2009 Chateau Burgozone Marselan Côte de Danube Bulgaria, Danubian Plain
80 points
Primary fruits in the bouquet. A bit creamy and menthol as well. In the mouth everything is round and supple, with some red cherries, a touch of sweetness and acidity. Not a bad wine, but nothing special either.
Red
2008 Bertrand Bergé Fitou Les Mégalithes France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Fitou
85 points
Dark red. In the bouquet spiciness and herbs. Creamy mouth feel with soft tannin and dark berry fruits. Some white chocolate as well. An enormously friendly wine, but lacking excitement.
Red
1995 Château Nenin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
88 points
Beautiful bouquet with figs and beautiful oak, smoke, cedar and earth/truffle. On the palate silky soft tannin and chocolate. A beautiful, soft, well balanced and fairly complex wine which is completely ready now.
Red
2001 Elderton Shiraz Single Vineyard Command Australia, South Australia, Barossa
91 points
Blackberries and chocolate. Concentrated. Good juice. Enormously tasteful. Elegance as well. Still very beautiful and I don't think the wine will improve.
Red
2006 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
89 points
Expressive and concentrated bouquet with dark fruits, licorice, spiciness and pleasant oak. Dark as well as red forest fruits on the palate with a firm amount of acidity and bitterness. The wine is still too young and will improve with 2+ years of cellaring. 89+
Red
2004 Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico Vigna Camarato Italy, Campania, Falerno del Massico
89 points
Beautiful bouquet with the exceptional combination of banana, chocolate and oak. Very ripe fruits. Soft start. Chocolate again, mocha, a bit earthy, good bitterness. Not extremely refined or complex, but certainly an excellent wine.
Red
2003 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Clos Fontà Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
Beautiful bouquet with dark fruits. Ripe fruits. A firm amount of sweetness balanced by good acidity and soft tannin. A beautiful and elegant wine which is at its prime now. Probably best to drink it over the next two years.
Red
2004 Montevetrano Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGT Italy, Campania, Colli di Salerno IGT
91 points
Beautiful, complex and elegant bouquet with ripe cassis and luxurious oak flavors. On the palate quite classical with cassis and good acidity, round tannin and a lot of soft bitterness. Already open and expressive and the wine can last at least another 5+ years.
Red - Fortified
1991 Cálem Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
86 points
Not many notes. A light weight, but pleasurable port wine. Completely ready now (and the next few years).
