Introduction

Over the past few years the wine press has placed a stronger focus on the "classic" producers like Mayacamus, Ridge, Diamond Creek, BV, Inglenook and Beringer. Napa is coming out of yet another round of stylistic change. "Bigger is Better" had been the mantra for much of the 2000's at some wineries, and wine makers and growers have a renewed focus on balance.

Personally, as a consumer I got away from the names that got me into wine over the years. These were generally vintners making "scale" production wines at entry pricing levels. Some of these wines I started to find manipulated in one way or another, but reports on the quality of 2013 and better wines from some of these classic entry level producers made me decide to have a tasting. Additionally, the recent 95+ dropped on the Clos Du Val Napa Valley gave me interest in seeing how it does against its "peers".

Flight 1 - 2013 Classics (4 notes)

Red
2013 The Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Allomi USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Nose: Blackberry, Tobacco, Melted Licorice, Spice and Charred Oak. Palate: Enters with Blackberry Jam, Cassis and an iron/soil note. Good up front fruit, with earth/tobacco nuances. Tannic in the back palate and grips hard. Finish: More dark berry fruit, charred oak, and some heat.

Decanted 3-hours this gets to 90+, but did not show well on the pop. #2 in the lineup.

Red
2013 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Nose: Violets, Blackberry, Cherry, Sage and sweet earth notes. Very classic napa, but in a old world way. Palate: Decidedly middle weight palate feel, with elegant blackberry, graphite and cherry notes on entry. Some astringency, but it is young. Finish: Good round edges in the finish with some herb notes.

Hypothetical Margaux/Stags Leap blend here. This was just much more perfumed and elegant than the others in this group. Needs time, but still #1 today.

Red
2013 Buehler Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
Nose: Blueberry, Blackberry, Cedar and Mint. Palate: Very modern styling and full ripeness here, great blue fruit and mountain notes. Finish: Mouth filling with rich fruit, lingering fruit leather and a bit of spice.

PNP this was great right out of the gate.

Red
2013 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
87 points
Nose: Black Cherry, Cocoa, Baking Spices and dusty earth. Very Rutherford. Palate: Expressive red fruited entry with some blackberry fruit in the mid-palate. Great soft mouthfeel and cocoa notes. Finish: Lots of heat and the softness seems to go away.

The most "classic" of the group, but #4 in the line up for us.

Closing

This was a great tasting, and gave me some renewed faith in Napa Cabs under the $50 price point. None of these selections were revolutionary, but the broad appeal and "honest" nature of the wines was appealing. At this price level there is a lot of highly manufactured juice out there, and each of these wines represented its house and vineyard sources very well.
