Weekly tasting group #055; A fully blind test.

Introduction

We get 10 wines in 10 glasses. All wines of a different varietal or blend and from a different location. We have to tell in approx 1 hour where the wine is produced and of which varietal or traditional blend, the vintage and as many details as we can give. For big ego’s this is the ultimate way to land with both feet on the ground and become humble again ;-) ;-)!
(Because I organized it, I know all the wines. But another participant puts my glasses in a different order, so I taste the wines blind as well. And believe me, then it is still not easy to do....)

Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red
2011 Famiglia Cielo Primitivo Puglia IGT Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT
81 points
Cherry fruits in the bouquet. On the palate quite lush with some sweetness and firm acidity and bitterness. Red currants and some spiciness. Overall a clean wine, but not with much complexity.
Red
2009 Chateau Burgozone Cabernet Franc Bulgaria, Danubian Plain
76 points
Transparent red. A bit lactic and showing cherry yoghurt and lemonade. Same on the palate. Special and not really in a positive way. Not even close to Loire Cabernet Franc. Firm acidity and bitterness. On the other hand; nothing really wrong with the wine. In the "objective" sense it does not show any complexity, but there is nothing really wrong with it either. Just a very simple and not very characteristic Cabernet Franc as you might expect.

2008 Verenigde Achterhoekse Wijnbouwers Regent Achterhoeks Goud Netherlands, Gelderland, Achterhoek
78 points
Transparent red. Special bouquet with some (toilet…..) perfume. The bouquet is quite expressive. On the palate candy flavors like cherries and raspberries. Medium (candy) acidity. Some bitterness. Not really pleasurable and also no complexity. But also nothing wrong with this lemonade style of wine.
Red
2004 Agricoltori del Geografico Chianti Classico San Giovanni Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
79 points
Ruby red with a slightly carmine rim and high viscosity. On the palate some earthy impressions as well as autumn forest. High acidity and bitterness. In fact a bit disappointing Classiso. Some thought it was slightly corked, but I don't agree about that. Possibly the wine was not completely fresh, but imho the earthy impressions can belong to a Chianti. Anyway; the wine was not really impressive and ready now.

2001 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
87 points
Light carmine red. In the bouquet mainly dark, but also some red forest fruits as well as some oak. On the palate the same impressions, some salty licorice. Ok acidity and bitterness. Although most tasters were not really impressed about this wine, I thought it was quite ok, but not exceptional. Ready now.
Red
2008 Turning Leaf Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California
82 points
Dark red with still a purple hue. A bit lactic and yoghurt impressions in the bouquet. On the palate a bit perfumed, candy like with a firm amount of sweetness, mild acidity and tannin. A very easy going wine. Becomes more pleasurable with some more air time, but is not really great or complex. Just an easy drinker and ready now and the next few years.
Red
2011 Jean Lepetit Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Garde du Pape Réserve Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
79 points
Light transparent red. Red fruits and rhubarb in the bouquet. On the palate red fruits, a bit candy like, but also ok acidity and bitterness. Easy going wine with a medium length. For a C9duP this is a rather disappointing wine without a good balance. Completely true: For a (special offer) price of below $ 9………….. what can you expect? And considering that, you might think it is an ok wine. (I also uploaded the label……. all special references are there: "vieilles vignes" "selection" "terroir".) Mister Lepetit understands marketing…… I hope he will ever learn how to produce really good wine as well…. But honestly, at this price, who am I to complain…. ?

2000 Château Lynch-Moussas France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Beautiful and classical bouquet with cassis, smoke and some graphite. On the palate cassis and other dark berry fruits, licorice, good oak and acidity. Soft tannin. The wine is entering maturity stage now and will probably be lovely to drink until 2015 – 2016 or maybe even a bit longer.
Red
2008 Viña von Siebenthal Syrah Carabantes Chile, Aconcagua Valley, Panquehue
86 points
Some smoke, black forest fruits and sweetness in the bouquet. On the palate Eucalyptus, spiciness, quite much sweetness and ok acidity and tannin. A full bodied wine. The alcohol shows a bit. Ready now and the next 5 years or so.
Red
2003 Gran Clos Priorat Gran Clos Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with a lot of herbs and spices and ripe black cherries and black berry fruits. On the palate the same impressions. Very ripe fruits, full bodied and lush. The sweetness dominates a bit, but there is mild acidity, tannin and bitterness. Beautiful wine, ready now and the next few years.
