Introduction

All wines were tasted not blind.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2011 Brogsitter Walporzheimer Domlay Frühburgunder trocken Edition B Germany, Ahr
87 points
The bouquet hardly shows any fruits, well, maybe some red berries. But there is smoke, earth and something not unpleasant stinky. On the palate red berry fruits, some spiciness, chocolate, high acidity and a sweet note. Soft tannin and a medium long finish. Special and pleasant wine.
Red
2011 Meyer-Näkel Frühburgunder Germany, Ahr
88 points
Something pleasantly stinky in the bouquet, some minerals, red berry fruits, cherries and earth as well. On the palate red berry fruits and cherries again, smoke, tobacco, sweet spices, high acidity and some metal. The tannin is friendly. Typical German "Pinot Noir". Ready now and the next few years.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Jean Stodden Recher Herrenberg Frühburgunder Germany, Ahr
90 points
Complex bouquet with dark plums, smoke and earth. On the palate chocolate, sweet spices like cinnamon and minerals. Oaky flavors as well. Good acidity and soft tannin with a pleasant bite. Good length. Tonight I scored the wine 90+ and reading my previous note I wonder; did the wine improve that much or did I learn to appreciate German Burgunders? Probably a bit of both.
Red
2011 Deutzerhof Frühburgunder Alpha & Omega Germany, Ahr
88 points
This wine gets 6 months of new French oak. Special, but not really unpleasant bouquet; dark berry fruits, minerals, some barnyard and red beets. (Some tasters also mentioned sauerkraut). On the palate red and dark berries, relatively firm acidity and soft tannin with some bite. Also a pleasant touch of sweetness. Really nice wine. Early maturity now.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2008 Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoss-Altenahr Spätburgunder Trocken Germany, Ahr
87 points
This wine gets 7 months of new French oak. The result is ok, but not extremely special. In the bouquet soft red berries, some smoke, barnyard and earthy flavors. On the palate red fruit acidity, a lot of sweet spices and soft tannin. Medium bodied at best.
Red
2009 Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoss-Altenahr Spätburgunder Selection XII Germany, Ahr
87 points
Some cherries and vanilla in the bouquet. On the palate juicy red berries, some chocolate, some metal, ok acidity and soft tannin. A touch of sweetness as well. Ok wine. 86 - 87
Red
2010 Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoss-Altenahr Spätburgunder Germany, Ahr
flawed
This wine was slightly corked, but it was not completely impossible to write something down. Some acidity in the bouquet. On the palate firm acidity, some spiciness and firm tannin. The corked impressions made it impossible to write something about the finesse of this wine.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2011 Sermann-Kreuzberg Altenahrer Eck Spätburgunder Trocken Germany, Ahr
84 points
Light and not very expressive bouquet with some impressions of metal. Same on the palate; quite thin, red berries, some acidity and tannin, but overall not really interesting. For tonight just 84.
Red
2011 Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoss-Altenahr Walporzheimer Kräuterberg Spätburgunder Trocken Germany, Ahr
87 points
The bouquet shows some red berries and smoke, but is not really complex. Same on the palate with sweet spices like cinnamon and vanilla, ok acidity and some sweetness. The wine has 15% ABV, but it doesn't really show. Ok wine and early maturity now. 86 - 87
Red
2011 Weingut Kloster Marienthal Spätburgunder Der Abt Germany, Ahr
88 points
Sweet ripe fruits like strawberries and raspberries in the bouquet. On the palate the fruits are up front as well; very ripe and very sweet. Beside the berries some cherries as well. Some spiciness and hardly any oak. Juicy and elegant wine with a good length, but lacking real complexity and finesse. Early maturity now.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2011 Jean Stodden Neuenahrer Sonnenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
90 points
This wine gets 18 months of oak. Beautiful and refined bouquet with smoke, sweet spices, tobacco, autumn forest and luxurious oak. On the palate juicy red fruits, smoke, tobacco, baking spices and chocolate. Ok acidity, slightly sticky tannin and some bitterness. The wine is still a bit too young. For tonight 90+, but with some more age on it, it will probably score a bit higher.
Red
2008 Jean Stodden Herrenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs Germany, Ahr
91 points
This wine gets 19 months of oak. Beautiful bouquet with minerals, earth and autumn impressions and soft oak. On the palate red berries, sweet spices, chocolate, vanilla, minerals, good acidity and soft tannin with still a good bite. Some good bitterness in the finish. Certainly an excellent wine, but you must be a real fan to make it worth the money.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
2011 Meyer-Näkel Spätburgunder Germany, Ahr
85 points
In the bouquet ripe red berries and some smoke. On the palate sweet and ripe red fruits, some acidity and round tannin. Overall a light weight with a bit too much sweetness.
