Introduction
Finally managed to book dinner at The Harrow which has now won its first Mitchellin star. We opted for the tasting menu with the matched wines.
Flight 1 - Loch Duart Salmon with English Asparagus (1 note)
Great match and the food really brought this wine out
Flight 2 - Seared Foie Gras, Scallop and Black Pudding (1 note)
The black pudding was more oatey than 'normal' and much the better for it. Surprising that a dry riesling went so well with this. Tried with the previous wine as well which turned out to be too fat even though it seemed to be Sauternesque.
Flight 3 - Fillet of Dover Sole with a Wild Mushroom Ragout (1 note)
Perhaps the most disappointing flight. The mushrooms were probably the highlight and matched the wine well but the fish seemed a little over cooked
Flight 4 - Welsh Lamp and Pea Puree (1 note)
The peas didn't seem to be pureed but didn't matter, this was great with slow cooked saddle and pan fried chop. The wine was also a great macth, quite new world but a great match.
Flight 5 - Tasting of Cheeses (2 notes)
A great selection of cheeses and well presented on a single plate per person.
Flight 6 - 'Rhubarb' (1 note)
Good dessert but wasn't so impressed with the wine.
Closing
Overall the food was excellent. The wines were well matched but felt the food outshone them, they could have been a step higher to complement the food better.
