Domaine/Maison Jadot and Couvent des Jacobins - Beaune

Tasted June 29, 2016 by Burgundy Al with 708 views

Introduction

Late afternoon tasting in the cellar with Olivier Masmondet. Started with 2014 whites, 2015 Chablis tasted blind, then 2015 reds from barrel, then some mid-aged wines, then a few more 2015 reds. Then dinner.

Flight 1 - Cellar Tasting from Bottle and Barrel (33 notes)

White
2014 Louis Jadot Bouzeron Domaine Gagey France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Bouzeron
Tasting at the domaine. This is the "golden aligote," which is a unique aligote hybrid. Ripe lemon and lemon peel with lots of acidity, while nicely balanced and refreshing. Probably a very good value everyday drinking wine.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc Domaine Gagey France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Floral with plenty of green apple. Good burst of energy middle forward. Good overall.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Green apple with a lemon hint. Clean, precise, good length. VG for its level. Will drink well young.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Ripe apple and baked apple with sweet spice and hints of toasted almond and marzipan. Ripe throughout, this is more fruit-driven than texturally exciting. A very good wine for the near or medium term, probably not to hold past 2024.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Starts off rather fat with good spice. Ripe apple, some stone fruit hints. Lush, forward with rounded textures. Good+ young and medium-term.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle Domaine du Duc de Magenta France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Dense fruit with good concentration. Rounded and forward start with a lenaer, more elegant middle and finish. Very good length, very good overall.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Apple and pear aromas and flavors with some lemon peel. Sensational floral start as well. Very long and powerful. There is a firm, tannic, structured element on the finish I really like. 92-95 point potential, this is beautiful in both fruit and structure. Needs a few years in the cellar.
White
2014 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Orchard fruit throughout with wonderful balance coming through already. There is a coiled reserve as well, so good for the near-term and also very cellarworthy. 92-95 point potential.
White
2015 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Blanchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. We knew this was 2015, but it was served blind. This was a little tough to fully assess since battonage was done a week+ ago. Pronounced minerality with apple, pear and lemon custard. I incorrectly thought this Meursault Perrieres.
White
2015 Louis Jadot Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. This was the second wine served blind, and we thought this also Chablis. Greater concentration, density and power vs Blanchot, but less stirred up. Same minerality throughout, but also longer. I didn't think this was Les Clos simply because I've near seen/ tasted Clos from Jadot. Very good.

Red
2015 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Les Cras France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Red
2015 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Very large-scaled, dense and backward at present. Brooding, needs 10+ years in the cellar. I think this has 90 point potential, but it's certainly not for everybody.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Good power with juicy black and red fruit with earth hints. Good spice, good density. Impressive and tasty already now. 91-92 point potential, but cellar to 2020 forward. Given how much I enjoyed the 1959 and 1962 vintages last week, I expect this will age effortlessly past mid-century.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. This vineyard is near Pommard and it shows the black fruit and clay textures of Pommard as much as it does Beaune. Moderate length and little finesse, this has chunky textures and a straightforward character. Cellar at least 5 years to soften. Good+ for its level.

Red
2015 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Clos de la Commaraine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Bright, ripe fruit aromas and flavors to start, followed by more dense and rugged flavors and firm structure. Good for its level.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Black fruit throughout with background spice. Dense and meaty but elegant at the same time with smooth tannins and engaging minerality. Very good length. For me, this is a big step up over the Clos de la Commaraine. 90-91 point potential, 2030 forward.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. floral start with ripe and bright red fruit, nicely balanced with some roasted meat notes. Refine structure for such young Corton with very good Grand Cru density. 91-92 point potential, 2025 forward.

Red
2015 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes Domaine Gagey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. slightly more weighty and firm vs Fuees, but not nearly as vibrant or exciting. Red berry with background spice and floral notes. Needs time.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. All black fruit with an elegant style, sublte spice throughout but good roasted meat notes. Elegant tannins. VG for its level.l
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. More black and meaty vs Petite Chapelle with slightly more background spice. I also like the balance and length here, 91-92 point potential, but this needs at least 5 more years in the cellar, probably 10.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Darker and more concentrated vs LSJ, but also somewhat backward and brooding, so slightly less balanced for now. cellar to 2025 or later, with 90-92 point potential.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Black fruit with braised meat flavors and spice. Long and incredibly well balanced already with excellent concentration. 93-95 point potential here, a great performance.
White
2013 J.A. Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé Les Perrières Tête de Cru France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
90 points
Tasting at the domaine, intended to brighten our attention, taste buds and senses after the opulent 2015 reds. Green apple with floral hints. Finishes with intense minerality above all else, then nice fruit, followed by good acidity.
Red
2011 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Black fruit throughout, firm but good balance. Some bitter hints on finish, in the manner of 2011s. Good for its level.

2011 Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
88 points
Tasting at the domaine. Lighter style that works best for many 2011s. elegant red fruit. Very good for the vintage.
Red
2011 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes Domaine Gagey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Pretty red fruit aromas with spice hints. Less open on the palate, but still tasty while firm. Good+ for its level.
Red
2011 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Open black fruit aromas with some game notes. Meaty flavors as well, but a little awkward structure with rugged edges. Good for its level.
Red
2008 Louis Jadot Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Maturing slightly earlier than I'd expect with pronounced and firm structure.
Red
2008 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Maturing red fruit with very good spice and dried herbs. Imperfect balance right now with tannins and structure slightly askew. I liked this better at release, and expect it is in an awkward state right now, like many 2008s I've tasted in the past year.

2008 Louis Jadot Griotte-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasting at the domaine. Dried red cherry with elegant spice. softer start I enjoyed, meatier finish i also enjoyed. Probably best in the medium-term, now through 2023.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Black cherry and berry on nose and palate. Spice middle forward. Dense and concentrated in the middle, then even more dense and concentrated by the finish. 92-95 point potential.
Red
2015 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Back cherry and berries unfolding and nuanced already. Spice and sauvage notes. Incredibly elegant already with wonderful balance. Cellar a decade+, 94-96 point potential.

Flight 2 - Dinner at Couvent des Jacobins (5 notes)

We brought a bonus bottle given to me earlier that afternoon by M. Gagey's new son-in-law.

Perfectly mature right now with ripe apple and earth. Great spice, excellent concentration. No upside from here.
Red
1990 Louis Jadot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
Ripe red and black fruit with woodsy spice, earth notes and overall good balance. Very good length, far more elegant and finessed than I expected from ripe vintage Savigny at this age.
Red
1989 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
90 points
Fully mature black and red fruit from a clearly ripe vintage. Easy to enjoy, good concentration, moderate complexity.
Red
1980 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Bottle came from the best possible source this afternoon with a perfect fill. Popped and poured. Started by showing fully mature red fruit and wonderfully reduced mushroom, cooked over many hours. Background savory spice. By the time we finished the bottle an hour+ later, this put on more weight and the fruit even freshened up. Incredibly alluring, classically Vosne aromas by the end. Thanks, Charles!

1983 Louis Jadot Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
95 points
Served to us blind. A pre Clair Dau Musigny, so from purchased grapes/ must/ barrels. Whatever this comes from...what a great wine. Dark and powerful, in fact still almost brooding. Intense throughout with a slightly sweet, very long finish. Absolutely zero decay. Exactly the type of wine I adore.
