Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2013 Maison L'Envoyé Morgon Cote du Py France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Medium ruby. Musky cherries. Dry, medium bodied, lots of earth, lightly tannic, and slight finishing tartness which is very Gamay. Very good bottle for the near term.
Red
2014 Marcel Lapierre Morgon France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Unsulfured cuvée. Light color. Some definite olfactory funk. Light weight but beautiful sappiness. Full of strawberry and herbs, nothing off about it in the mouth. Elegant, excellent length, loads of earth at the end. Wonderful and quite typical vintage of this wine.
Red
2014 Daniel Bouland Morgon Les Délys France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Deep ruby. Complex aromatics of camphor and blackberry jam. Medium weight with terrific sap. Deeply imbued black fruit with natural sweetness, strong but not screechy acidity, great sense of soil, classic, drying tannins. Wow, in Gamay terms, this is pretty profound stuff. The most impressive bottle of the day, even next to 2 of my favorite Beaujolais producers-bravo!

Red
2014 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Light ruby. Brett and herbs on the nose. If I had tasted this blind, I would have guessed Guy Breton since the wine was so light and herbal. Difficult to get much fruit out of this. Elegant weight but dry, gritty finish. I almost never enjoy Foillard's Corcelette as much as the Côte du Py, and so it was today.
Red
2014 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Darker color than the Corcelette. This too showed a bretty aspect, but here there was deep black cherry fruit on the nose as well. Medium weight, very flowing and sappy with typical fine Gamay acidic snap at the end. Soft earth and tannins, great texture, very classy and very Burgundian. I'd be more confident about its future if it were cleaner, but at this point, no funkiness comes through in the mouth. With that caveat, it should prove to be a great Foillard.

2013 Jean Foillard Morgon Les Charmes Eponym' France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Light center. This also has a stinky nose. Closer in weight to the Corcelette, which is to say light. Nice red fruit and blood orange, garrigue, soil, and excellent acidity. Complex and correct, but not nearly as exciting or textural as the '14 Côte du Py.

Closing

Some excellent 2014's, particularly the Bouland Delys. In recent vintages, I have been chagrined to find brettanomyces in many of the bottlings from Jean Foillard and Lapierre. Today, this did not ruin the wines that we tasted, but I mention it because of the concern of how it will affect the wines over time if you are interested in aging these cru Beaujolais.
