Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Balland Curtet Meursault Les Narvaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Darn, not as good as the first of 8 bottles. This one was showed oxidized and was clearly an inflicted bottle of wine.
Red
1998 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Pop n' pour and slow oxed for 2-3 hours. You know how they say Burgundy is a minefield, well, I hit a mine with this bottle. The nose was quiet and what did come through was unpleasant, hard fruit. The palate followed suit. Really no depth or textural pleasure here as the wine is hard and fruit is unpleasant. Not sure this ever gets better. One bottle left ... let's see if how it turns out in 10 years.
Red
1996 Maurice Écard Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Jarrons France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
Full nose has savory red fruits, mushrooms, toasted herbs, and iron. Palate has medium weight and moderate concentration. Nicely balanced and should hold for several years, but I'd call it a peak drinking window now.
Red
1999 Maison Leroy Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
A very nice Bourgogne and impressive that it's held up for so many years. Lots of red cherries that still have some sweetness. Modest structure, but enough to keep the wine fresh.
Red
1988 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Procès France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Out of magnum. The nose here is absolutely singing -- full and layered with savory and sweet cherry aromatics. The palate has terrific depth and concentration. Silky across the palate. Excellent delineation. A real treat.
Red
2002 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
92 points
One of the more impressive Village wines I've had in recent memory. Excellent concentration. Everything is in proportion and well balanced.
Red
2008 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
87 points
This showed rather simple and four square, with none of the spice you'd expect in a high quality Vosne. Otherwise the wine is certainly correct and well balanced.
Red
2007 Frédéric Magnien Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
92 points
An approachable Bonnes Mares, which in and of itself is quite an achievement, at this age. Full nose has darker tones with black cherry and earth. Palate has good density and weight, but nice lift and energy, for an overall smooth impression. Drinking well now, and no overt oak/modern appearances.

White - Sparkling
2008 Raphaël & Vincent Bérêche Champagne Grand Cru Côte France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Drank to toast the Cubs winning the NL pennant. Didn't really take time to contemplate the wine ... so no TN.
Red
2004 Costers del Siurana Priorat Clos de L'Obac Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Late night pop n' pour. This hasn't held up well. Very ripe on the nose with some VA poking through. The palate is big but the fruit has started to fade, yet it's still ripe. Really just an out of whack wine that hasn't stood the test of time.
Red
2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Late night pop n' pour. Not a typical Beuacastel, to be sure. The nose is full and dense with ripe, roasted black fruit and herbs. Palate is full bodied with lush, round black fruit. Very concentrated. Shows a lot of Syrah character. Big, ripe but balanced. Not sure how this one will age given the warm vintage.
