Introduction

8 of us gathered at Ray and Teresa's while it snowed all night.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
2012 Mumm Napa Blanc de Blancs Devaux Ranch USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
89 points
Drank a small glass at a tasting. Good fruit and acid. Definitely California, not Champagne.
White
2013 Raymond Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
I drank a small glass at a tasting. This had some butter, a touch of oak, but mostly was lean and lively. There was not a lot of depth here.
White
2011 Château de la Crée Santenay 1er Cru Beauregard Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru
89 points
Pop and pour, drank a glass over an hour than a couple hours later had another glass. This is light and elegant. I wish there was more body here. Sulfur, crisp green apple.
Red
2012 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Pop and pour, drank a small glass at a tasting. There is a lot going on in this wine - mostly fruit. Juicy and Napa-esque, with some leather and animal in the mix.
Red
2009 Lillian Winery Syrah USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
90 points
A 2 hour decant, drank 1.5 glasses over 1.5 hours. Compared to the last bottle, this seemed more alcoholic and less fruit on the palate. I'm wondering if this wine fits the standard modern profile - the fruit fades and there's nothing behind it. I hope this is either in a dumb phase or a bad bottle.
Red
2006 Dashe Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
88 points
Slow o'd for a couple hours, drank a small glass over an hour. There is some menthol on the nose that mingles with some greenness in the wine and makes it challenging. The wine rounds out over time and gains body. The tannins are well-integrated and silky. I wonder if this needed a decant.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Taittinger Champagne Nocturne Sec France, Champagne
90 points
Mostly consistent with previous note. This wine could pass as a Brut, there's just a touch more sweetness than usual. Good Champagne character with yeast, oak, lees.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Pop and pour from 375, followed a glass over about 45 minutes. This started light and gained body. Kind of elegant, with creme brulee and toffee. It is quite sweet.
