Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted fully blind.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Fortified
N.V. Delgado Zuleta Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Oloroso Monteagudo Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
93 points
Amber color. A really complex bouquet. The first thing that came into mind was a sauce of cep (is that proper English? It is funghi porcini in Italian; a beautiful and tasteful mushroom with nutty flavors.) In the bouquet also nuts, figs, caramel raisins, coffee, iodine and smoke. Same on the palate; full of tastes and very tasteful. This sherry is nicely dry with good acidity, soft bitterness and an enormously long finish. The alcohol shows a bit. Not something I would like to drink on a weekly basis, but that is very personal. This is a top quality Oloroso sherry.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2011 Viña Ducaro Campo de Borja Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja
76 points
Parsley, celery and lavas in the bouquet; in other words; vegetable soup. On the palate light bodied, some green apple, but not fresh apple, some limestone minerals and a little bitterness. Dry, but not really refreshing. Nothing really faulty, but a very sad wine.
White
2011 Marqués de Riscal Verdejo Rueda Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
80 points
Flowers, some citrus, peach and grasses in the bouquet. On the palate the same. Some herbs, lime, and grapefruit, but overall not really convincing. Someone said this must be an off bottle. I am not sure.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
2011 Faustino Rioja V Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
80 points
In the bouquet some parsley, celery, anise and some salty impressions. On the palate fresh lime, melon, some flowers and tart green apples. Acceptable, quite basic wine.
White
2010 Gaujal Picpoul de Pinet Cuvée Ludovic Gaujal France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet
81 points
Not really an expressive bouquet, but there are some white fruits. On the palate some peach, a bit fat, not sweet, but on the mid palate not much acidity. Some bitterness and minerals and a firm amount of acidity in the finish. Not really a well balanced wine.

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2010 Ramón Roqueta Pla de Bages ull de llebre Spain, Catalunya, Pla de Bages
81 points
To be honest; some were a little enthusiastic about this wine; I was not. Clear blood red color. Cherries and yoghurt impressions in the bouquet as well as on the palate. Some white pepper. Very primary and without complexity.
Red
2008 Bodegas Campillo Rioja Crianza Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
82 points
Blood red. A bit dusty and reticent bouquet with a lot of (American?)oak and some spiciness. On the palate a lot of oak again, some chocolate, bitterness and green, unripe tannin. Over time the wine became a little better, but overall the oak is too dominating and the wine not really complex.
Red
2000 Château Maucaillou Felletin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
81 points
Blood red with a very slightly carmine rim. In the bouquet some iron, licorice, leather, blood and a touch of VA. On the palate some chocolate, cherries, red forest fruits, unripe black forest fruits, some strawberries, a firm dose of oak and drying tannin in the finish. This was a blind note and after seeing It is a Bordeaux of the great 2000 vintage I was really disappointed. What a sad effort this is.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
2005 Bodegas Campillo Finca Cuesta Clara RARO Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
88 points
The bouquet is a bit locked but shows green herbs, tobacco and some oak. On the palate juicy start with vanilla, red berries, a touch of sweetness good acidity and soft tannin. Ok length.
Red
2005 Mas Chirlin Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
In the bouquet smoke, toast, sulfur and phosphorus in the almost volcanic bouquet. Same on the palate. Juicy acidity and pepper. Special wine. Need to taste again. No score.
Red
2003 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Clos Fontà Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with red and dark berries, some oak and a touch of sweetness. On the palate a sweet start, round and creamy tannin, chocolate and good oak. The wine is ready now, but no real hurry.
