Flight 1 (12 notes)

White - Sparkling
1989 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Cuvée Fleur de Champagne France, Champagne
3L bottle. ripe apple with background butterscotch notes. Very enjoyable and festive for right now, this was starting to lose energy by the end.

2005 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
From magnum. Baked apple and ripe peach with plenty of floral support. Nicely fresh, very good concentration, even if slightly less nuanced or texturally complex than the best of Leflaive shows at ten years.

2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
91 points
From 3L. Floral start with a bit of new oak and apple pie character. Fat, lush and fun, this seemed less energetic to start but somehow refreshed itself into a better wine with more time in glass.

Magnum. Musty to start with intense and wonderful concentration. Clearly corked 30 minutes later.

1999 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Served blind from magnum. Floral start with ripe apple and some lemon peel hints. Soft, elegant textures with Grand Cru density and a very long finish. I thought this Grand Cru from 2002, another ripe vintage.
Red
2009 Hospices de Beaune Mazis-Chambertin Cuvée Madeleine Collignon Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
From magnum. Lots of black fruit and background spice, this is fleshy and flashy to start, but with the unmistakable density and concentration of well made Grand Cru that will improve with a decade in the cellar.

2009 Hospices de Beaune Corton-Cuvée Docteur Peste Domaine Ponsot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
From magnum. Served alongside HdB Mazis-Chambertin Cuvée Madeleine Collignon (elevage Comte Liger-Belair). This wine was less showing and more "old school" with cross-section of cherry aromas and flavors and lots of tension, especially for the vintage. Certainly enjoyable today, but less pleasure vs the Mazis; this demands more cellar time with 92+ point potential, but hold for at least another 5 years. (From a barrel purchased by my Phoenix "Friday lunch" Burg friends.)

1993 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
93 points
From magnum. Nicely mature red and black cherry aromas and flavors with Vosne-like spice. Perfect balance throughout, this comes across as mid-weight but really expands on finish. At a great place now. My favorite wine from lunch.

1977 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California
90 points
From magnum. Black cherry and plum with faint tobacco and savory dried herbs. This is big and dense, with a firm finish and a few sharp edges, but still very enjoyable. Others enjoyed this more than I did today.

1990 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
From double magnum. Maturing black fruit aromas with good spice. Similar flavors, just slightly bretty and slightly lacking in substance and concentration (to me) for a 1990. Others liked this more today, but I've found others always like Lagrange 1990 more than I do.

2005 Ferraton Père & Fils Côte-Rôtie L'Eglantine France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
89 points
Magnum. Black fruit with some roasted meat and faint background spice. Overall good balance, but moderate weight and length made me simply wanting a little "more."

2010 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Magnum. Unapologetically modern styled. Baking spice, vanilla, liqueur and blackberry jam but with great density and impeccable balance. Way too young to fully appreciate, but I can see this as a 93++ point wine, even if not necessarily the style of Chateauneuf I prefer.

Flight 2 - Between Lunch and Dinner (3 notes)

Much thanks to Reed Day and his better half, with great appreciation for their hospitality and generosity.

2009 Domaine Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Ripe apple and pear with slightly sweet spice and mint hints. Good weight and length, very rounded textures.

2003 Domaine Leroy Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
A crazy amount of concentration and dry extract here with ripe fruit that is maturing gradually and shockingly balanced for the 2003 vintage. Perhaps not everybody's Grand Cru Burg, but very easy to enjoy and admire.

2005 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Slight reduction to start, but this easily opened up over 15 minutes. Plenty of floral elements started to emerge with ripe apple and candied lemon peel and lemon curd. Very impressive concentration apparent immediately, this was then expanding and lengthening for the 20-30 minutes I was able to spend with the wine.
