Introduction

Final evening, and the one I've most eagerly anticipated - Red Burgundy. Some excellent examples to appreciate the differences between the different quality levels, and also the stylistic difference between Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.

Points to remember about Pinot Noir: moderate alcohol, moderate to low tannins, fresh to high acidity, so serve cool. Looking for subtle aromas, so a big glass allows you to appreciate the perfume and scent. The French use the acronym PIA - persistence, intensité, aromatique.

Flight 1 - Côte de Beaune (3 notes)

Red
2014 Stephane Aviron Fleurie Vieilles Vignes Domaine De La Madriere France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
86 points
Pale ruby. Medium intensity aromas of simple red fruit - strawberry and cherry with some white pepper. Youthful. Dry palate, fruit driven, bright red berries, fresh acidity, low tannins, light body, medium alcohol (12.5%), moderate length. Good quality cru Beaujolais, drinking very nicely now.
Red
2009 Camille Giroud Pinot Noir Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
83 points
Pale garnet. Medium (-) intensity aromas of red fruit, violets, earth. Developing. Dry palate, low tannins, slightly sharp fruit, starting to dry out, a bit short on the palate. Past it's best.
Red
2004 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Champans France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Pale garnet, brown rim. Medium aromas of dried red fruit, earth, sweet and fragrant, makes you want to linger. Fully developed. Dry, fresh acidity, light tannnins, silky, medium (-) body, medium alcohol (13%), medium intensity flavours of sweet fruit, spice, barnyard. Medium (+) length. Nice complexity. Very good quality, fully mature, premier cru Burgundy. Drink up in next couple of years.

Flight 2 - Côte de Nuits (5 notes)

Red
2010 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay
88 points
Medium ruby, garnet rim. Nose quite closed, black cherry, vanilla, violets, forest floor. Developing. Dry, moderate (+) fresh acidity, medium (-) chalky tannins, medium body and alcohol, ripe fruit, moderately persistent finish. Good village wine, juicy, attractive, decent length but lacks complexity. Drinking nicely but some life left in it.
Red
2004 Domaine A.-F. Gros Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
89 points
Pale brick. Complex bouquet, fully developed and mature - barnyard, leather, game, sweet red dried fruit, smoke. Dry, smooth, supple, medium (-) tannins, long finish. Delicate, transparent. Good lieu dit wine. Drinking perfectly.
Red
2010 Dujac Fils et Père Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
89 points
Pale garnet, pale rim. Gentle sweet fruit on the nose, hint of game and earth. Developing. Pure fruit, not complex, gentile tannins, silky fresh acidity, nice length. A typical better-quality village wine, has plenty of life left in it.
Red
2006 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
90 points
Medium garnet, brick rim. Ripe red and black fruit, vanilla, spice, fragrant, floral, some undergrowth. Developing. Dry, medium (+) acidity, moderate chalky tannins. Nice length across palate and finish. Slightly dry edge from wood tannins. Very good quality developing Premier Cru Burgundy, but not outstanding - lacks complexity and length. Probably not one for the long term but may still develop further.
Red
2000 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
94 points
Pale brick. Sweet game, undergrowth, coffee, forest floor, spice, dried red fruit, very persistent nose. Fully developed. Mouthfilling, silky moderate (-) tannins, generous sweet fruit, complex, medium (+) alcohol and body, long in mouth and on finish. Outstanding mature Grand Cru Burgundy, drinking beautifully, but with plenty of life left in it. A wine to linger over and contemplate life.

The Drohin Laroze Bonnes Mares was definitely the wine of night, the Volnay 1er Cru Chapans from de Montille was excellent too. None of the other wines blew me away, but a greatly enjoyable tasting.
