Introduction

A lovely evening with Kate Krause from Conha y Toro.

Flight 1 - Oysters on the Shell with Cara Cara Orange & Radish Braised Short Rib Flatbreads with Cubanelle Peppers, Asparagus and House Ricotta (1 note)

Decent wine but very good match, particularly with the oysters.

White
2013 Concha y Toro Sauvignon Blanc Terrunyo Chile, Casablanca Valley
87 points
Crisp citrus flavors. Easy to drink but nothing memorable

Flight 2 - Kampachi Tartare, Avacado, Chiles, Lemongrass, Cilantro (1 note)

Delicious. The fish really improved the wine. A very very nice pairing.

White
2014 Concha y Toro Chardonnay Marqués de Casa Concha Chile, Limarí Valley
89 points
Decent nose.
Sort of in the middle on the richness spectrum. Vanilla, apple and a little coconut. It was enjoyable but didn't knock me over.
Really was a great match with Kampachi Tartare.

Flight 3 - Grilled Pork Belly and Lamb Sausage Pickled Plum Salad and Cornbread Croutons (1 note)

Red
2014 Trivento Malbec Golden Reserve Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
87 points
Better than most Malbec.
Red fruit, mostly plum I think. There was a nice spiciness that elevated it to something a little better than ordinary. There was some acidity that cut through the pork belly.

Flight 4 - Wagyu Strip Morels, Edemame, Ramps, Watercress and Trufle (1 note)

Red
2011 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto
91 points
An elegant wine but with a little brashness.
Red fruit is predominate with minerality which moves to a smooth mid palate. The finish is on the long side.
It hasn't reached the same place as the 2000 was a couple of years ago, and honestly I don't think it will be. But that is okay.

Closing

Chef knocked this out of the park. Every course was bold and flavorful while at the same time, nuanced and complex.
The food really let these wines show to the fullest. And the Don Melchor continues to prove that it is one of the finest of the Southern Hemisphere.
