Introduction

The charming and enthusiastic Claude de Nicolay was kind enough to take us through a good sampling of the 2015's in both colors. Impressive purity and structure, even given the rich year. The 2015's were all barrel samples.

Flight 1 - Reds (6 notes)

Red
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Dark color. Rich, primary, ripe red and black fruit. No Savigny briary bite since it is so ripe. Freakish village Savigny in its depth and succulent fruit, but no heaviness whatsoever. This kicked off the tasting on a delicious note.
Red
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses
Deep ruby. Still ripe although not as much as the Savigny. Some green herb as well. More earth than that village wine has currently. Tannic finish. Good. Needs at least short term aging.
Red
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
Not as deeply colored as the first 2 wines. Much more earth on the nose. Strong red fruit, higher acidity, good soil, and solid tannins. Refined, elegant for the year, clearly for the future.
Red
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Maréchaudes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Ruby. Complex aromas already. Earthy cherry fruit. Clearly less ripe than others that preceded it. Excellent acidity, properly austere, dry finish. Serious wine with a lean line that belies the nature of the vintage.
Red
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Also full ruby. Ripe cherry aromas and almost chocolatey richness on the attack. Then excellent acidity and a "snap to attention" finish with lingering limestone. Like 2 different wines at this point-great fruit upfront, and the essence of minerality to finish. Exciting potential and I loved tasting the distinct components at this stage, but it will need a long time to knit together and become a unified whole.

Red
2014 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
Lighter than any of the '15s. Cranberry scents and some floral fragrance. High, very zingy acidity. Lean and classic with tannins that penetrate and don't let go. Don't even think about touching this for another 6 to 8 years. This really highlights the different structure of 2014 compared to its successor.

Flight 2 - Whites (2 notes)

White
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
Ripe citrus and pineapple. Lush and glycerine, only average acidity. Nice mouthful, but hardly an exemplar of focus or minerality.
White
2015 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Finer, less ripe, pear fruit compared to the Île de Vergelesses. Piercing, floral nose. Lots of soil, better acidity. Long, dry finish. Reminiscent of the Corton Bressandes in that it starts out rich and finishes lean and dry. Excellent! Makes me wish I could have tasted the Corton Charlemagne.
