Introduction

Italian Portfolio tasting followed by dinner in the restaurant with our own wine - Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino 2001.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
2013 Giulia Negri Langhe Pinot Nero La Tartufaia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
88 points
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, emdium intensity, with aromas of red cherries, toasty oak, sweet spices. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, firm mouth-drying high tannins, medium+ almost full body. Medium+ flacvour intensity, with flavours of ripe red cherries, spices, emerging earth. Long drying finish.
Good quality. Ripe and deep expression of Pinot Noir fruit, though mouth-
drying tannins causes the overall feel to be a rather rough textured rather than elegant as I prefer my easy drinking Pinot Noirs. Maybe another 2-3 years will soften the tannins.
Red
2011 Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of lightly tarry earth, perfumed floral roses, red cherries, sour red cherries, red plums. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol , medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, sweet red plum, sweet tarry earth, spices, stony minerality. Long finish.
Very good quality. Classic Barolo expression, though on the thin elegant side rather than the masculine powerful sort. I suppose it shows the terroir of La Morra commune, and supposedly majority fruit from the Brunate plot.
Great QPR. Drink and enjoy over the next 4-5 years as it develops. Don't really think it's a long ager though.

2012 Tenuta di Biserno Lodovico Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
Appearance is clear, deep intensity almost opaque, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla, licorice, macerarted black plums, black cherries, stony minerality. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe black cherries, black plums, blackcurrant, blackberries, licorice, stony minerality. Long finish.
Very good quality. No doubt very obviously internationally styled. But let's give credit where credit is due. This is good. Big, powerful, muscular, and concentrated, but still maintaining a sense of balance.
Should drink well with another 2-3 years of age and will last well into 2020-25.
Blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.
Red
2012 Tenuta di Trinoro Le Cupole Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of grilled bell peppers, earth, red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, red plums, sweet minty spices, and grilled bell peppers. Long finish.
Good quality. Ripe accessible Bordeaux blend, though somewhat simple and lacking complex layers. Drink now and over the next 3-4 years as it develops a bit more. Not for long ageing.
Blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, 27% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot.

2010 Tenuta di Trinoro Palazzi Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of mocha earth, ripe red cherries, red plums, redcurrants, sweet spices. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (15.5%!), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe red cherries, red plums, redcurrrant, sweet spices, mocha, fresh earth. Long finish.
Very good quality. Polished modern international style. Opulent. Definitely not a wine that would be for everyone. Objectively though, it is a very well-made good wine. However, bad QPR judging by its merchant selling price.
Drink now with air and over the next 5-6 years.
Blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot.

Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of fresh dark aromatic herbs, earth, ripe red cherries, redcurrants, red plums. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (16%!!!), fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of grilled bell peppers, sweet spices, ripe red cherries, redcurrant, red plums, sweet earth, licorice. Long finish.
Very good quality. Big opulent ripe Bordeaux blend that is clearly a supercharged SuperTuscan. Definitely get this right in a blind taste. High percentage of ripe Cabernet Franc probably adding to the aromaticity and showy accessible black fruit on the palate. Very soft mouth-feel despite the high alcohol.
Blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot.
Just about entering into drinking window. Can you imagine how good this will be in 5+ years' time with more age. I remember how good a 1999 vintage of this was.
Bad QPR. Glad I got to taste this though. I like it!

2009 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Sangiovese Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
95 points
3 pours of this precious baby from the bottle. I went to the corner to contemplate this alone each time I tasted.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, rather shy initially and opening up with some swirling in the glass. Medium intensity, with aromas of sweet Tuscan earth, mild red florals, dense black cherries, stony minerality, dark spicy herbs. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (14%), silky fine medium tannins that are almost imperceptible unless you are consciously assessing it, medium+ body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe black cherries, dense sour red cherries, dark earth, sweet spices, stony minerality. Damm bloody lingering long finish.
Such a cliche, but I just have to use the word - ethereal. This wine made my night. Apologies to all the other good wines of the night.
Age this another 6-8 years, and pray it rewards your patience.

Red
2001 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
94 points
Poured into decanter and drank over 2 hours over dinner at Pasta Brava. Generously brought by Asparagus.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, toasty vanilla oak, sweet spice, black cherries, slight rubber. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet black cherries, blackberries, licorice, sweet spices, new black leather, sweet dark earth, black rubber, some sour red cherries. Long finish.
Very good quality. Unabashedly modern styled Brunello di Montalcino. Must have been a monster of a wine when young. Drinking very well now. Not for further ageing. The balance is great now. Modern style that is integrated well with sufficient age.
World of a difference from the Soldera tasted earlier in the night. Though a good wine on its own too.

Closing

A most enjoyable tasting. I tasted but did not rate the first few wines of the tasting. Spat those into the spittoon. Let's not say more. I did drink quite a bit of those I rated. Good stuff.
