Introduction

Jessica from Country Vintners was our hostess on a very pleasant early Summer evening. Most of these wine were new to Best Bottle, and new to me.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

No apologies here, this one is a little sweet and may not work everywhere, but definitely has it's uses. Might occasionally have some merit as the first taste of the day when you don't feel like an acidic Sauvignon Blanc. This is the real thing, not an afterthought for this producer., the quality and intensity are readily apparent. Rich golden color. Honey, jasmine, citrus and minerals on the nose. Expressive, intense and refreshing orange, peach, other citrus and honey flavors. Just enough acid to keep things credible. Long, lingering finish and aftertaste.

Have not seen this label before. Still hanging in there and in some ways still quite young for a red wine already six full years off the vine. Everything here is big; fruit, oak, tannins, acid, body and color. A lot of wine for $14 in South Carolina. A bit of molasses with the dark fruit on the nose. Some mature, secondary flavors appear with swirling and time in the glass. Full bodied, long, lingering Aussie finish.

2014 Force of Nature Zinfandel Mossfire Ranch USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

This is kind of a find. Fruit forward and hedonistic in an old fashioned way. Dark rich color for a Zin. More intensity and complexity than expected. The impression on the palate is slightly sweet even though this is totally dry. Nice viscosity for a thin skinned grape. Several interesting, secondary, earthy and mineral flavors.

Kind of a hedonistic, California style fruit bomb, and there is a place for them. Not very expensive and designed to be comfortably consumed right away. Not simple, but not complex either. Big, exuberant, expressive California style ripe nose of cherry, raspberry, sweet plum and blueberry trust continues all the way to the finish. Full bodied juicy mouth feel. Really smooth and approachable. Not overly oaky or acidic. Red licorice, a small hint of vanilla, cola, and pencil lead with the fruit on the finish.

Red
2014 Duorum Douro Tons de Duorum Portugal, Douro

Can't seem to get enough of these smooth tasting, moderately priced, well rounded and complete red wines offerings from Portugal. First off, this one has a deep purple almost opaque color. "Old World" style, earthy, vanilla influenced strawberry and raspberry nose. The fruit, in a style consistent with many of the Portuguese red we have tasted lately, is almost, but not quite California fruit forward. Lively, fresh and juicy prune, blackberry, black cherry and mulberry fruit flavors. Well managed moderate tannins. Ready to drink. Vanilla and red fruit on the finish. Sort of reminds me of a Petit Sirah. Really evolves as we drink down the glass.
