Introduction

A tasting of various Chardonnay labels from New Zealand

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2013 Greywacke Chardonnay New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
90 points
Full ripe stone fruit, nutty, some reductive hints that probably from the closure and the work with the lees. The wine still feels closed and tight.
In the palate, the wine feels again tight, ripe stone fruit, beautiful oak frame, hazelnut, walnut, med body, balancing acidity, long finish.
OUtstanding quality, still very young.
White
2014 Kumeu River Chardonnay Village New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
88 points
Med to high intensity, quite nutty profile, a bit of reduction too, a few ripe stone hints, coffee notes.
The acidity is quite high ig not aggressive, reduction again, crispy, citrus, med body, long finish, it feels very fresh and young.
Nees to come together
White
2015 Kumeu River Chardonnay Coddington New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
Fresh, vibrant, lime, citrus, lemon, almond, nice oak frame, buttey.
In the palate, the wine is still very fresh, high acidity, lime, lemon, citrus, it needs to come together, med finish.
White
2014 Kumeu River Chardonnay Hunting Hill New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
91 points
Muted nose, oak in the back, fresh fruit with reduction.
In the palate the wine is again very fresh but shows more than the nose, fruit is more upfront, lime, citrus, high acidity, long finish, will hold
White
2015 Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
92 points
Closed, muted, needs time, nutty nuances, ripe stone fruit.
In the palate, the wine feels again fresh but gives promise for higher complexity, lime, lemon, citrus, med body and long finish.
With time, the oak gets more upfront, the wine gets buttery and creamy.
Outstanding quality, will be great to see this one with a few more years on its back
White
2014 Ata Rangi Chardonnay Craighall New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
88 points
Quite muted nose, nutty, ripe stone fruit.
The palate shows citrus fruit, oaky frame, low intensity and muted character as a whole, it feels one-dimensional, so out of character for an Ata Rangi wine.
