Tina's House

Introduction

Annual Christmas Eve gathering chez Tina. Mid way through I felt the onset of illness so some of these notes may have been impacted.

Flight 1 - Appetizers (2 notes)

Both wines were well suited to the array of bites that included patatas tortilla, shrimp cocktail, avocado toast and Italian tuna & bean salad in endive cups.

White
2015 Capanna SanGioBi Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Disclaimer: I think I was in throes of onset of a cold so my buds may have been compromised. A curiosity as I don’t encounter a lot of Sangiovese bianco. Good acidity but seemingly not much flavor.
White
2015 Bodegas Ordoñez Las Suertes, Old Vines Nisia Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
(Perceptions may have been skewed by an oncoming cold) as intriguing and complex as the first bottle but this one showed more oak and flab.

Flight 2 - Dinner (2 notes)

Medium rare prime rib with bacony brussel sprouts, carrots and roasted potatoes. Amazingly the two reds were almost identically dark red. The Burgundy was the better pairing for me.

Red
2008 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
A really nice bottle in a really nice state. Lovely with prime rib. Curiously as dark as the Vino Nobile. Intense raspberry flavors buttressed by some spice notes. Good depth and well integrated.
Red
2013 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Il Nocio Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
(Posssibly compromised tastebuds due to oncoming cold) Deep and sternly structured. Strikes me as being slightly shut down. Seemingly good core and well made though a challenging drink presently. I’ve been impressed with Boscarelli across a swath of its offerings.

Flight 3 - Dessert (1 note)

From Cannelle Patisserie: Vanilla bûche de Noël with passion fruit and buttercream & Creole (chocolate sponge cake with white & dark chocolate mousse and coffee syrup. From Saint Honoré: peach tart & tiramisu cake. Also homemade chocolate chip cookies and some blue cheese.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Boscarelli Vin Santo di Montepulciano Familiae Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vin Santo di Montepulciano
Strong Cognac on the nose but not boozy on the palate. Caramel stood out - even a bit too much - but energetic fruit lurking in the background made this compelling and insisted I drink quite a bit more of this than I planned.
