Introduction
Tasting a series of from the 2014-2016 Burgundy vintages on a rainy afternoon in Redwood City.
Flight 1 - White Wines (6 notes)
White
2016 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
Extremely pale at this stage. Decent aromas of pear, lemon, and dusty hint of wood. Flavors are very light, with bright persistent acid.
White
2014 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir
Aromas of tart green apples, pear, and buttered toast. Silky texture with a nice mix of butteriness and tartness on the palate.
White
2015 Domaine Thomas Morey Bourgogne Blanc
Peach, green apple, a whiff of smoke, and florality. Refined flavor, and nice balance between acid and sweetness.
White
2016 Château Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes
Strikingly fragrant, with green apple, butter, peach, and minerals.
White
2015 Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet
Very impressive. Complex aromas, even at this young stage, progressing through crisp fruit (peaches & apples) to fresh grass to dry herbs to hints of oak and smoke. The aromas are mirrored on the palate, along with crisp acidity. Long finish.
White
2015 Olivier Leflaive Chassagne-Montrachet
Needs more time, right now everything is overpowered by oak.
Flight 2 - Red Wines (6 notes)
Red
2015 Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne
Surprisingly pale color. Bursting with a complex set of aromas that reminded me of BBQ sauce (in a good way). Sweet (strawberries), smoky, earthy, with herbal hints all melding together. Bold flavors, with lovely balance between acid and rounded tannins. Drinking well right now, but planning to hold until later next year as I think it will improve.
Red
2015 Danjean-Berthoux Bourgogne Chaume Ronde Vieilles Vignes
Aroma of stewed strawberries and raspberries, anise, compost, and a hint of smoke. Acid is slightly too much right now, overpowering the fruit, but once tannins kick in during the finish it improves.

Red
2015 Danjean-Berthoux Givry Meix au Roi
Largely sweet aromas of strawberry and cherry, with just a hint of minerality adding depth. Lacks acidity and ends up being fruity and flabby.
Red
2015 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
Striking aromas of strawberry, leather, violets, and hints of pine. Lovely crispy acidity, smooth tannins and a medium+finish, with a surprising hint of pine. Pleasant and refined.
Red
2015 Joseph Drouhin Nuits St. Georges
Really striking wine. Profound and intense aromas of strawberry, leather, and pine. Lovely integration already, with near-perfect balance on the palate. And a long finish that kept surprising me with its persistence as I waited in line for the next wine in the flight!
Red
2015 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée
Elegant aromas of strawberry, blackberry, leather, and something both earthy and herbal at the same time. Bold flavor, with intense acids, but soft tannins which left the wine a little unstructured for my taste.
