Introduction
A lovely dinner and tasting up at Knightsbridge with Etienne Montille, his importer, and his local distributor, along with the usual gaggle of wine geeks. Chef Matt did a nice job on food as always.
Etienne was great - very knowledgable and down to earth. Lots of good insights and stories.
the 04 Whites were very strong, almost across the board from the three domaines - Chateau de Puligny, Du Montille (haut Negoce!), and Domaine Montille. The 04 reds were surprisingly good for the vintage, but I did not like them as a whole as much as the whites. The 05s of these wines will probably be very good.
We also tasted through about 10 other wines prior to sitting down to the formal tasting, but I did not get notes on them - the bourgogne was a standout.
Flight 1 - With Passed Canapes (1 note)
Flight 2 - With Terrine of butter poached lobster (3 notes)
Flight 3 - With seared Chilean sea bass in beurre blanc (1 note)
Flight 4 - With duck breast, cassoulet style (2 notes)
Red
2004 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Full brigth red. Bright tighter red/black fruit on the nose. Good tight black fruit and bright acidity on the palate. Still a baby Pommard - others like it a little better than me.
Flight 5 - With Grilled Protivi Veal Chop on gruyere potato puree (2 notes)
Red
2004 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Full ruby red color. Spicy sweet red fruit on the nose. Big tight sweet spicy red fruit carried through on the palate. This was my favorite of the 04 reds and was surprisingly open for business for a young Pommard.
Red
2004 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Full red/purple color. big nose of candied red and black fruits with some hint of heat. Tight tannic black fruit on the palate. This was the most 'closed for business' of the reds.
