Introduction

More housework at the storage with motivation supplied by pulling out half a dozen wines and tapping them with the Coravin, covered and left them for 20-25 minutes

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2008 Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
From Coravin. Red berry; strawberry, slight leather, muted vanilla, a little spice. Slightly baked on the palate with a little non-intrusive alcohol on the finish. Tannins are fine. Fruit a little muted and, perhaps, faded. Hmm
Red
2004 Tyrrell's Shiraz 4 Acres Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
From Coravin. Oof, a bit funky and gamey initially, plums, leather, freshly tilled earth, a little black olive and almost liquorice over slight sweet oak and prune. More of the same on the palate though the prune is more evident. Tannins are slightly gritty and the fruit doesn't carry. Okay. It's kind of sitting in a middle ground between maturity and primary. A little awkward.
Red
2010 J. Lohr Cuvée Pau USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
From Coravin. Rich, slightly overripe, ripe black cherry and currant. Vanilla, cedar and sweet spice: Smells worked and ripe. And so it proves on the palate. A little raisining to the fruit and drying tannins as well as some alcohol warmth makes me want to reach for the BBQ tongs.
Red
2008 Tapanappa Cabernet-Shiraz Whalebone Vineyard Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Wrattonbully
From Coravin. Ripe black hued fruits; berries and currants, touches of savoury spice, a hint of almost diesel here, still a quite primary nose even after ten years. On the palate it's juicy, a little foursquare (polite) or monolithic (accurate) though with good fruit length and stylish and integrated tannins. Years left for me. Pretty good.
Red
2007 Marcarini Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From Coravin. Sweet cherry, slight orange peel, sweet spices especially cinnamon and nutmeg, a little floral component and some earth and plum. Oh my! Juicy, almost zesty, acidity, fine textured, non-intrusive, but massive chamois leather tannins, carry delicate fruit and floral flavours an awfully long way. In a great spot if you like 'em young but not obnoxiously so.

Red
2004 Fontanafredda Barolo Lazzarito Vigna la Delizia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From Coravin. A slightly richer version of the Marcarini - more ripe cherry and plum, and the sweet spices are more prominent. It smells a little more polished with slight vanilla and cream. In the mouth it's juicy and mouth watering, more plummy than cherry with huge cheek puckering tannins which stomp (with the slightly avuncular fruit and a little oak) around the palate for a very long time with a little alcohol warmth coming through towards the end. Time required for me.

Closing

More Coravin fun! I was surprised that the Tapanappa and the Fontanafredda were so youthful.
