Burgundy evening at Restaurant Kreuz in Obergösgen (I KNOW, RIGHT?!)

Introduction

We met with a bunch of wine afiniados for Burgundy night at Restaurant Kreuz. While the food is already worth a visit, what made me travel all the way from Zurich was the probably unmatched offering of (aged) Burgundies which the owner, Herbert, complements with his personal cellar if you‘re into wine and he likes you. He also sells these rare bottles at inventory price plus a margin - which for 15-20 year old Burgundies is very attractive!

We had in total 4 flights, 1 with white Burgundies and 3 with reds.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White

Ripe fruit, citric but also leaning towards tropical (mango comes to mind) and camomille tea. inititally a rubbery note that fades quickly. Still very fresh on the palate with a toppish acidic profile - was wondering premox for a second but the nose was perfect hence probably not. Opulent and dense and over time salty butteryness and increasingly floral (white flowers). Next time I would try and give it a 1-2h decant (we didn‘t this time) to maximise the pleasure.

Medium to low intensity. Flavours mostly on the citric side with fine oaky, toasty notes. Very well balanced on the palate, feels almost a bit visous. Inoffensive acidity. Over time more flowery in the glass. If you own this I would recommend start drinking rather than wait any longer, feels like pretty much at a peak or maybe already past.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2002 Gérard Raphet Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Immediately intense, very gamey and meaty flavours cloud a distinctly red pinot fruit. A bit of an alcoholic / chemical touch. Beautifully fresh yet heavy on the palate with a long finish - memorable is the first impression. But there was occasionally also a faint hint of something being slightly off which I cannot attribute.

Red

Fine red fruit complemented by subtle secondary earthy, leathery aromas and a bit of smokeyness. Hints of herbs or spices. A tad imbalanced on the palate but can‘t say if just not aged enough, too little decant (only opened the bottle couple of hours before, but no decanter) or just no can do any better.

Red

Aromatics more on the fruity side with a carbonated sweetness. But also spicy. Surprisingly young and not yet well integreated on the palate - it would appear this needs a few more years of bottle age?

Immediately reminded me of coke. Fine fruit and still appears very young with hardly any secondary aromas. Very fresh but not yet well integrated on the palate. But after 1-2h in the glass (we opened the bottle in advanced, but didn‘t give it a proper decant) this became da bomba. More intense and almost silky on the palate and for me wine of the night. Would definitely give it a good decant of 2-4h.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red

First need to mention the colour. Almost erotically red. Earthy, leathery flavours with a pleasant and fresh fruit. Soapy perfume. Still an edgy tannic structure. Powerful but / and still feels juvenile. Opened hours ago but didn‘t decant - mistake.
